Bypass surgery and osteoporosis

Hi everyone, I am UK based. I am looking at bypass surgery and reading up and researching as much as I possibly can. My mum has osteoporosis and I know that I will need to take supplements etc afterwards. Should I need to be additionally concerned about this? I will of course speak to my surgeon but just wondered what your experiences were. Thank you

they'll have you taking Calcium and Vitamin D after surgery (probably for life), so that usually helps to prevent it. So does healthy eating and weight-bearing exercise (e.g., walking, running, weight lifting...)

I have osteoporosis, but I'm in my 60s and also, it runs rampant in my family (or at least in the women). I don't know how much of a factor my bypass was (if at all) since I didn't have a baseline done before surgery.

Have a bone density check. It’s a good idea to have one done regularly if osteoporosis is in your family regardless of your surgery. It will pick up if you have signs of osteopenia. (It’s more common in women over 50 but with your family history you may be more likely to have this first sign of bone loss younger.) Better to get on top of it before there’s noticeable loss of bone density & you start experiencing more complex issues. Start adding Calcium rich foods to your diet (look for low fat ones though) & supplements as needed.

I developed osteoporosis after RNY. Because Fosamax is so hard on the stomach surgeon recommended annual Reclast infusion. I did that for 2 years and reversed osteoporosis to osteopenia. Best of everything to you. I am 69.

i've been doing the annual Reclast infusions as well. So far, so good...
