Sick from protein powders

Recommended Posts

I am 10 days out from the sleeve and barely getting any Protein in me. The powders make me sick, no matter how I mix them. I cant afford to keep buying more things that will make me sick.

when I called the doctor's office, the nurse was very flippant

I see the doctor in four days. I know I have lost weight this week, but I am afraid he will know I havent been getting the protein in me!!

Try Premier Protein shakes from costco they’re on sale the rest of this month $19.99 a box. I love the Cafe Latte. If that don’t work try some vegan like Garden of life powder.

Heads up about the caffe latte (which I agree is delicious btw) it has caffeine. Some people aren’t allowed caffeine that soon post op.

Yes all the other flavors do not. Forgot about that. It’s been a while for me. Some do allow caffeine though. If you like coffee I would just ask.

I had an adverse reaction to any creamy Protein Shake after surgery. I’m almost 2 months out and I still can’t stomach them. I found that the Isopure fruit flavored powders work best for me. It is a clear Protein Drink. You can get them on Amazon or at GNC. There are several flavors….mixed berry is my favorite.

Also try Gatorade Protein drinks, they are good in a pinch.

Try Bone Broth. It has a lot of Protein and it's savory, which may taste a lot better for you now than anything sweet. Also, you can have unflavored Protein Powder and add it to other foods, like Decaf coffee, fairlife high protein milk, Soup, etc. Just make sure you mix it according to the directions before putting it in your food or it will get clumpy and gross.

What stage are you on? liquids still? Puree? As someone said above, Bone Broth, Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt has like 15 grams of Protein. A few of them a day may help and should work for you in liquid and puree stage (if you're still in one or the other). Same with cottage cheese. Just have to know what you're allowed and try and aim to get your protein from foods as much as possible since you're not liking the protein drinks/powders. Again, I don't know what stage you're in but I stopped with all Protein Drinks just about a month out and instead concentrated on getting it from other sources food-wise.

Do they actually make you sick, as in nausea and/or diarrhea, or you just can't take the taste (not uncommon)? It is not unusual for people to become lactose intolerant after surgery, which can make you more sensitive to various whey based Protein drinks. Those that are 100% whey isolate are usually well tolerated as the lactose is filtered out in the processing, but it is more expensive, so many products, including the popular Premier brand, use a cheaper whey blend or concentrate that is only partly isolate, so are not as well tolerated by those sensitive to it.

There are other protein drinks that are based upon other Proteins such as pea, egg, soy, etc., which may not be quite as well absorbed as whey, work OK if that is all one can tolerate.

Oh ok. Also keep in mind, or at least this was true for me, I was told not to worry too much in the first few weeks about getting the entire amount of Protein or even Water in. My surgeon, and the paperwork the dietician provided, said that many times it's hard to meet those goals in the beginning weeks but that was ok. I imagine once you move on to puree, or whatever comes next for you, that you will easily be able to get your protein from other sources aside from the powder/liquid protein drinks if those are truly an issue for you.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
