Travelling Abroad for Gastric Sleeve - Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi gang,

Decided to take the leap and get my life and guy sorted for good. Life time dieter nothing has worked well enough.

I was contemplating going to the EOC medical centre in Mexico for my surgery ( with Dr Eliaz Ortiz & Co).

I was wondering for those who have had surgerys abroad how do you managed with post op issues or (heaven forbid!) complications when you return home?

Im in the UK and blessed with NHS as support, but I know that GP's love to pass people off to specialists.

Can anyone share their experiences with Post Op support in the UK after returning abroad from thier surgery? Were you palmed off to a specialist? Was it NHS covered (for free) or did you have to pay per visit? Any extra insight you have would be awesome.

Also ... Not sure if people can answer this one. Travelling from Mexico back to the UK after my surgery ... It's such a longer flight than most people take ... Are there things to consider going on a long flight after this type of surgery? The package offered by the medical centre is 5 days, should I extend my trip to give my body more time after surgery before stepping on the plane.

Thanks for all your help in advice.

GinWench :)

Hi, I am hoping to have the surgery in the UK so am really unable to help but I would imagine that you would get the correct advice from your NHS doctor and your Mexican surgeon. Questions cost nothing and these are things you really need to know. Your travel insurance may have clauses too. The Airline will need letters that you are fit to travel home too

Are we allowed to travel to Mexico at the moment?

I did a just over 4 hour flight on 4th day after surgery. It was tolerable. Not sure about more than double that... By week 2 you'll feel better.

** Just an additional note: I'm not planning to go for my surgery untill all the bans on Travel are lifted in the UK. **

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
