Trouble with drinking 1/2 hour after eating

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I had my surgery on May 18. Until a week ago things were going GREAT. Last Friday I started feeling SUPER full once I started drinking again after a meal. I thought maybe i was slacking and drinking too soon after eating. But it is happening even when I wait a full 30 minutes after eating. I mean sick super full, need to throw up to relieve the discomfort, super full. It doesn't happen all the time, and it seems to be happening mostly after eating tuna salad and any kind of chicken. My 2 main questions are: 1) does anyone have to weight an hour after eating to drink again? And 2) could it be that I wasn't ready for the tuna and the chicken? Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post!

Yes, has happened to me. It did not start until 3-4 months post surgery. It does happen frequently with chicken. It is lessening as I get better at remembering to eat very slowly. I am also better now at sooner recognizing when I need to stop. Waiting to drink is very hard for me but I am now absolute on waiting a minimum of 30 minutes. If I have the slightest suspicion of any discomfort, I wait an hour. Fortunately, I get more than enough liquid throughout the day.

Some people do struggle with chicken because it can be too dry so it could have been that. tuna can be dry as well. If it only happens with certain foods it’s likely the food. Take those foods off your meal rotation for a week or more & then try them again. The wait 30 minutes is a general recommendation. Some need to wait longer some less. It does get easier as you progress. Most don’t need to wait 30 minutes in the long term but they still have to have a wait period of some duration.

Make sure you eat & sip slowly taking a break before the next bite or sip. Are you eating until you’ve had enough or until you’re full (there is a difference)? It takes time for the message to get through that you’ve eaten enough. If you eat until you’re full (the ugh I shouldn’t have had that last bite feeling or your restriction kicks in) you may need to wait longer for your tummy to empty a little to allow you to drink without causing discomfort. It does take time to work out the idiosyncrasies of your new digestive system.

Good luck.

a lot of people seem to have problems with chicken the first few months after surgery, so it could be that.

on the other hand, if it starts happening regardless of what you eat, that could be a sign of a stricture. If it gets to that point, contact your surgeon as they'll need to get in and fix that (I have two - at four weeks out and again at eight weeks out)

I’m three weeks post-op and am allowed soft chicken. I was so excited and I tried to eat some but it was NOT happening. I felt like I had a huge lump I’m my chest. I chewed probably 30 times, ate VERY slowly. I think for some people, chicken just doesn’t work until later months.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
