My surgery is scheduled for July 9th, so officially three weeks from today.
my doctor needs me to do a two-week pre-op diet, consisting of two Protein Shakes a day, one light meal, and several light Snacks like sugar free Jello and crudités with lite ranch. Decided to ease into it a week earlier so that I’m more successful during the real portion.
struggling to come up with meals that don’t consist entirely of Pasta and rice! It’s what we eat a lot of in my culture. Entire meals could be a bowl of rice.

here’s a dish I made today of ground chicken, avocado ranch, salsa and light cheese on a romaine boat. I’m still hungry but am hoping that with time, I won’t feel so anxious to get the super full satiated feeling I’m used to. i ate two of these, and could eat a third if it were available. Intentionally only cooked this amount.

what are some of your favorite quick recipes? What are some other items you were told were okay during pre-op dieting? Trying to practice what mynew diet will look like once in the recovery/maintenance stage.

Can't offer help cause I was only allowed Protein Shakes, broth, sugar free Jello, and a few servings of non starchy veggies during my pre op stage. LOL

Haha that’s exactly what I’m on! I didn’t realize that broccoli and corn are considered starchy. Bought some to eat raw, and there’s corn in my mixed veggies bag. So I’m just going to eat it and have it done before the official diet starts a week from today.

Broccoli isn’t a starchy food. Basically if it grows under the ground it’s a starchy vegetable. There are above ground exceptions like corn, sweet potatoes, peas, pumpkins which are starchy.

I was put on Keto but my friend followed a 2 shakes plus one meal of lean Protein & vegetables (steamed preferred) diet. But no Snacks, no dressings, no sauces, no dairy except milk in her tea or coffee. She grilled or roasted her meat & just steamed or microwaved her vegetables. She could add vinegar or lemon juice & any herbs or spices to flavour her meats & vegetables. I know she made omelettes a few times & baked some fish (made foil parcels with various herbs) besides basic meat & vege meals.

Non starchy vegetables:

  • Artichokes
  • Asparagus
  • Bean sprouts
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Cucumber
  • Eggplant (also known as aubergine)
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Peppers (also known as capsicum)
  • salad greens
  • Spinach
  • Tomato
  • Turnips
  • Zucchini (also known as courgette)

I’m not exactly sure of your requirements as I was only on Protein Shakes, broth, cucumbers and celery for 2 weeks but I’ve been putting together a meal plan for my sister and thought I’d share some of the things from it. Apologies for the numerous photos.

you're lucky - I was only allowed no- (or ultra-low) calorie fluids, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, a limited amount (I think a cup) of clear broth or Tomato juice, and 4-5 Protein Shakes a day. No food at all.

Oh wow… they are letting me have a light meal up until about a day before surgery, when I switch to births and Clear Liquids.

That’s a great list, thanks! There are some things I can’t eat, like edamame for the starch and some of the red or processed meats like sausage, but a lot of the rest of it looks great. Much appreciated!!

Glad I could help at least give you some ideas. I know there was a while after surgery that I struggled to eat variety and it got boring. Actually writing out meals helped so much when I felt lost and it was amazing what I could come up with after thinking about all the things I could eat and different ways to use them.

I was told I could have tuna fish with light miracle whip or light mayo, chicken breast with curry/mustard/light mayo or a little bit of sugar free BBQ Sauce, salad with dressings that were 50 calories or less per serving (I have to keep carbs to 50 grams/day or less). I plan to eat a lot of salads with chopped deli meat or tuna because after surgery it will be a while before I can eat salad again and I love salad. I like the bolthouse yogurt ranch and it's 45 calories for 2 tbsp (30g). It's the the refrigerator case in the produce section usually.

I have to have light greek yogurt or a Protein Shake for Breakfast.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
