When/How to buy new clothes

Recommended Posts

My way is to go to a local secondhand shop and find something nice there. Clothes there are usually of much better quality than in the shops, and you can easily find famous clothing brands there. I buy new very seldom and only when I need something specific like this Drawstring bags bulk from Amazon. I could not find it anywhere else, and I wanted this particular bag, so I got it. I don’t care much about what other people would say and just wear something I feel comfortable in and something that I like. This is the golden rule for me in terms of clothing.

See if you have a Plato’s closet near you. They have an adult version of the store with nice plus size clothing. Or if I know what size and brand fits, I just buy smaller sizes of what I know fits. This is true for me with pants at wal mart.

I’m a shopaholic and have donated a lot of my clothes to a church nearby. They actually posted a woman lost her clothes in a house fire & needed 3x. Most of mine were 2x, but I figured some would work. I’ve taken some dressier stuff to a consignment store & will admit I love buying size large &12 in pants, but I don’t want to overshop until I’m really done with weight loss. I buy either great sales or some from Sam’s/Costco due to low prices. Easier for my telework days, and have found the closest outlet mall for in office days.

I have noticed I look at my new clothes sometimes as I’m getting dressed and think “no way does this fit” and then it does! It’s like I switched bodies with someone 80 pounds smaller!

I did not buy many clothes. I was given a lot of clothes for different stages. If I can donate clothes to anyone, please let me know. I went from a size 22 to a size 12-14. The clothes I have are very nice and are different sizes.

Back to reply on my now ancient post. I bought a lot of clothes at thrift stores, but a lot of them had strong detergent/perfume that I was not able to get out, so some went right back. I couldn't tell how strong the smell was with my mask on. Still, I found some excellent quality good brands - Talbots, Loft, etc. I had much more luck with getting shirts to fit than with pants. Never got any pants that fit right. I buy hiking pants at LL Bean, Traveler's pants at Chico's and then I have a few pairs from Macy's that were pretty cheap. I also bought two pairs of jeans, but one is too tight in the calf.

What I did buy that makes me super excited is some handmade clothing by craft designers. These cost a lot more, but I can't see myself getting much smaller at this point. I have 5 shirts that I wear for work when I need to be "professional". They are really interesting and unique and it makes me happy to wear something that supports an artist. I just wear them with any of my black pants, some jewelry, my one pair of real shoes, and I'm good to go.

I also made use of my local Buy Nothing group on Facebook, and got some exercise shirts, but no one had shorts to give up, so I bought some on Amazon - the sizes there run small!

I've lost almost 40 lbs and I am not looking forward to sizing out of clothes. I don't have any clothes from my previous weight losses and so far my clothes are a bit loose but since I had recently gained 25 lbs during COVID, they aren't too bad, except for some I bought at my heaviest, and those are just long sleeve t-shirts, so it doesn't matter. I have noticed that my pants start to fall down when I exercise, so I might be getting close on that score...

For environmental/human rights reasons I don't want to buy a lot of cheap clothes and the thrift shops near me are pretty gross. Also, for some reason they are arranged by color rather than size so it's impossible to find anything. I'm wondering how long I can put off buying clothes that fit, since I usually work from home except when I travel, about once a month.

Has anyone done Thread Up? I did Gwynnie Bee (plus size clothing rental) when I lost weight the last time, but it doesn't really work with my current lifestyle of working from home and traveling once a month for a few days.

It's best to buy when you don't have the variety or have the means to do so. And of course if it is necessary, for example, when it is frayed or torn

There are three wealthy towns nearby that have a Savers, Salvation Army, and Goodwill plus a well off consignment store. Everything in our house gets thrifted except intimate items. I found tops the easiest to find. Pants need to be a name brand that I know fits me or my son well. When I lived in the Rockies, I would wait for a Denver or Phoenix trip to thrift in the cities.

This is a very old game, I sometimes play it to distract myself from my problems. I remember, just a month ago, choosing things for my child here https://thetrendytoddlers.com/pages/baby-girl-clothes and somehow I had a desire to download this game and nostalgia, to remember my skills. After downloading it and trembling fingers started to play, I just remembered my high school and college days, when my friends and I played it day and night non-stop, organized tournaments. I even remember winning a lot of them, I was really good at it. It was a good time.

I’m thinking about a post WLS clothing share subscription business that sends folks a capsule wardrobe size down each month (adjusted as needed) and return labels to send back the as your next shipment arrives.

Wondering if this is a service folks would consider subscribing to and what they’d be willing to pay.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
