Worried, not losing 1 week post op

I'm really discouraged [emoji20]. My SW was 255, after 2 week liquid diet I only lost 5 pounds to 250lbs. Right then I told myself that the surgery isn't going to work if 2 weeks of only liquids takes off 5 pounds. I decided that I tried everything else and might as well go through with it. Released from hospital at 247. Weighed myself at home next day and was 243lbs. My home scale has always been a bit lower than hospital scale by 3 or so pounds as I weigh nude. Today a week later weigh 241.

Lose and gain like this is common for me with doing Keto. I can lose 14lbs in two weeks doing Keto, just couldn't commit and keep it off. All of this to say, I fear I've done this for nothing. I'm having 2 Boost shakes (240 cal each), 1 Priemere Protien clear waters (90 cal), 3 x16.9 Oz bottles of Water, and 2 cups of low sodium chicken broth. I am walking 20 minutes a day.

Has anyone else experienced minimal loss and a gain within the first week? I'm starting to think I've made an irreversible mistake. Thanks for taking the time to read this [emoji4]

I feel you and have thought about the same things. My surgery was May 19th and since then, 18 days later, I only lost 13 lbs. Now I guess that's not too bad but like you, during the pre op diet of liquid only and very few non starchy veggies, I lost only about 6 lbs in that 11 days time. All I could think is, if I am very limited now in my diet and only taking in roughly 300 calories and I still can't lose, what would the doc or dietician tell me in order to lose weight? Eat less? I mean, that's not really possible.

Anyway, I am now in the puree stage and eating about 600-700 calories a day depending on what it is I eat based on the recommended 4 oz per meal, and no new loss. I worry about this and also about moving into soft foods next week. I fear nothing but stalls and it makes me worry that I too did all of this for nothing. I don't know. It's early still so I'm trying not to panic or be too negative. I guess we'll see.

It can be frustrating. I did not lose any weight after several days in the hospital. But I lost 12 pounds after 9 days post-op. So about the same. Now down 29 pounds at 7 weeks. So keep following the plan and you will see the weight decrease! Hang in there! 😀

Thank you for the replies! While I know that this surgery is a two way street, I just expected better results. I try not to look at the progress of others and compare, however the progress of others is what made me want to get the surgery.

Perhaps getting rid of my scale and focusing on healing/ sticking to plan is in my best interest. Obviously I can't go back and not have the surgery lol. I have my dietician appointment on the 9th, but am scared to leave the liquid phase. My follow up with surgeon is the 18th and will be the next time I weigh in. I hope things improve and I can look back at this post and encourage others in the same situation.

I’m 10 days post op. SW 279 CW 250.4. I’m struggling with being able to consume more than 2-3 bites. My concern is the “sick look” most surgery pots have. I want my weight loss to look natural and healthy. I have a family member who had surgery last year she’s lost a lot of weight but it looks sick on her. I’m focusing on nutrient dense Vitamin packed foods. I walk 7-8000 steps a day and have been eating smoothie King mostly n chicken strips. Stay optimistic ❤️

14 lbs in two weeks is a lot, especially given your starting weight isn't nearly as high as some of ours was. I lost 16 lbs the whole first MONTH and I started out at 373 lbs. Not sure what you were expecting, but your loss is very normal . If you're trying to compare your loss to the people on "My 600 lb Life", don't. Those people start off MUCH heavier than the average WLS patient, and starting BMI has a huge effect on how much weight you lose initially. You are fine.

I would be very careful with smoothie king. I think their smoothies usually have lots of sugar and juice, both of which are not good for weight loss. Also, make sure the chicken strips don't have breading/aren't fried. And many people look a bit "drawn" after they lose a lot of weight but you'll see from people on this board that their weight tends to settle over time. Make sure that the nutrients you're getting are from real food rather than commercial smoothies or you check to make sure there are no sugars or fruit juices in the smoothies.

agree with this 100%. Things shift around and people who've lost too much tend to look a lot better after awhile. Also, be aware that there are a lot more people who never make it to goal than there are those who get too thin. A LOT. I would follow your plan and focus on losing as much as you can during the first few months when it's relatively easy. If you get "too thin", you can always increase your calories. But I would not worry about being too thin at this point at all. Like I said, a majority of patients never make it that far.

I agree with others that you are doing great. 14 pounds of weight loss in two weeks is incredible. I have only lost 25 in 12 weeks but I am still steadily losing. Idk your starting BMI but based on your weight you are somewhat lower BMI and weight loss will be slower than those with higher BMI’s. Several people on here have said that they continued to lose weight for like two years so the important thing is not how fast you lost it Just the overall trend downwards. Just hang in there you will lose it.

also, I don't think most patients end up with a sick look. Some do, but I don't think most of us do. And like I said, most patients never even make it to normal weight let alone get too thin - they end up "overweight" or "class I obese" (which is, of course, infinitely better than being super morbidly obese....). Here's me at my lowest weight - and where my body naturally stopped losing. I was at a normal BMI (still am), which if you'll look at stats, only 10-15% of WLS patients are able to make it to. So there'd be a pretty small percentage of people become too thin - smaller than the 10-15% who make it to a normal BMI. Again, yes, some - but chances of that are pretty low. I'd focus on losing as much weight as you can during the early months - but of course, while eating according to your plan. You need the nutrition.

I looked gaunt when I reached my lowest weight (or as my uncle told my mother ‘like death’ ☹️) but a few months later I looked fine. I really believe too that things resettle in your body.

You are doing well with your weight loss. Though it’s important to remind yourself that you’ll lose at your rate. Some people lose slowly, some more quickly. Both are the right way. But yes, unless your starting weight was in excess of 600lbs you’re not going to be losing the large amounts they do on that show to begin. And if you do watch that show, you’ll notice their weight loss slows the more they lose.

Also during the surgery, they pump you up with gas & fluids & it can take days to rid your body of the excess. Add in if your constipated, & your scales may not go down & may even go up. (I had my gall bladder removed last week & when I got home 24hrs later I weighed almost 3kgs, about 6lbs, more. I lost about 2kgs in one day & another kilo over the next two days. I was peeing like a race horse & my bowels started working again.)

I noticed lol. I'm the OP and am still at a stand still as far as weight. Yes, drinking 64 oz of Water, walking 30-40mins a day, 800 calories in the form of boiled shrimp, soft boiled vegetables, and boost shakes. Dr says in doing everything right.

Started the thread in hopes someone that has been through the same experience could have offered some insight. I've received some helpful DM's [emoji4].

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
