@Bluebonnetgirl it really is trial and error on what a sip is for you. Sometimes I try to drink and forget about my new baby stomach and it hurts 😱 I have to be mindful. It isn’t super fun right now

Hey everyone! My surgery is scheduled for July 26 one week left I’m having crazy amounts of anxiety and cold feet, I’ve been contemplating the surgery for 2 years but this past weeks have been crazy stressful 😭 I fear the anesthesia and complications, I don’t know what to do… 🤦‍♀️

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. I will have mine on that day also! Surgery is also always a little scary for me, too.

When I start to worry, I remind myself that I am confident that this is the right thing for me & know the risk of complications is very small.

Wishing you luck & hoping your fears stress & anxiety decrease before your surgery.

When I got a little nervous, I read back though the April, May, and June surgery thread, and I noticed that the surgery seems pretty safe. Reading story after story about good itchiness was reassuring. Did you know it is more dangerous to have a C-section than the sleeve?

Hi everyone! Just checking in five days post op. I've been feeling pretty good! My 3rd day after surgery was the turning point when I started feeling better. I think that was when all the surgery meds were out of my system. The nausea went away at that point and I didn't have any real pain just a little discomfort.

I have been doing fine getting my Water in, and today is the first day that I think I'll be able to do all of my Protein Shakes. I am also allowed to have some pureed food. I had a few ounces of pureed cream Soup two days ago and it was good. Yesterday I tried pureed refried Beans and those were satisfying.

I haven't had any problems with my sleeve hurting when I eat or drink. I am pretty cautious in my sip/bite sizes, probably from my years of terrible experiences with my lap band.

I had no interest in food whatsoever for the first few days after my band, and I really haven't felt hunger yet. I have noticed myself paying more attention to some foods on advertisements or when I am cooking and serving my children their meals. But overall it has been very easy to control. I think part of it is knowing that I can have any food I want eventually in small amounts at some point in the future. That makes me feel less obsessive about it.

This week I want to work on getting my calories up a little bit. I think I've only been around 200- 300 calories a day, and I had a dream last night where my hair was falling out, so I think my body is telling me to get a little more nutrition in there.

My main issue now is a lack of a BM. I hadn't had one for at least a few days before surgery and I haven't had any since then so that's like seven or eight days. I've been taking Miralax since before surgery and every day since then, so I don't think it is a water issue. I think I have motility issues with my actual intestines, and I'm sure the tiny amounts that I'm eating aren't helping that. I'm feeling a little bit bloated but not any pains. I probably will call my doctor on Monday and see if I need to add some sort of Fiber supplement to help.

Anyway things are good so far. I hope everybody else who still recuperating is doing well, and good luck to those of you who are having surgery this week!

@Maribelle76 Glad you’re feeling better. The bowel movement will come. It happened to be today, 3 days post op. Go ahead and do the Milanta if you’d like. Like you said…getting the calories in gas been a huge task. I barely got in 350 yesterday but reached my Water goal.

I had something similar happen...I have a hard time with Protein Shakes, and was just told to do protein waters instead, but not adjust the calories. Honestly, my dietician seems pretty useless. Thankfully, I was able to find some protein shakes that were tolerable, because I could not function on 500 calories a day!

Maybe to justify paying a dietician in the first place? An insurance thing like the psych consult? (also a hoop jump for insurance only)

For real! My session with the dietician also consisted of her just reading through the packet to me, and her being unable to answer any specific questions. I'm pescatarian, and don't consume much dairy, so the only animal Proteins I eat are fish/seafood and some eggs. She had no idea about recommendations for non-dairy Protein Shakes, and no ideas about customizing the puree/soft foods phases to be things that weren't all ricotta, cottage cheese, and yogurt. This is a major university bariatric center. Asking about plant-based alternatives shouldn't be so befuddling. I'd love some specific recommendations and recipes, but yeah, if you can't do that, give me the info to do it, myself, and don't charge me hundreds of dollars for a service you aren't really providing.

I’m currently doing the pre-op diet and reading these remarks makes me really sad but great fun for my team. I’m not getting this kind of run around and would be very angry if this was the case. I hope things get better for you guys!

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
