Hello all, so I have my surgery set for July 27, sleeve. I had my endoscopy last week and my surgeon found what he suspected was Barrett's esophagus signs, and biopsy confirmed his suspicion. He mentioned on his post procedure visit that I should really consider bypass. Does anyone here who has had the sleeve also have a Barrett's Esoph diagnosis? Is Barrett's a firm contraindication for a sleeve? I have a tele visit tomorrow where I feel he will highly recommend the bypass. Appreciate your feedback. Thank you all!

Monique, I called ask a nurse she said she didn’t think so but she sent a message to my doctor to call me back Monday. She told me to get back on and stick with it but it will probably be gone out my system by Tuesday. Jump back in there and flush it with Water. I am going to do a laxative to be sure.

Ugh, perfect that’s what I did today! Have you heard from your doctor by any chance ? Your 1 day before me so I would love to know how it goes regardless .

Hi, I'm new here. My surgery is July 22.

Things have gone pretty quickly. I saw the Dr. in April, did the colonoscopy and EGD in June and my surgery is on July 22. I have seen the Dr. a total of 3 times. There was no "approval" process since my insurance will not cover the surgery.

I was supposed to start the Liver Reducing diet Friday - but failed. I tried again today -- failed. I'm afraid I'm going to ruin everything.

I went online to look for a place where I could talk to others in similar situations. The last time I was involved in a forum was 2008 after reading "The Shack." lol

I’m scheduled for July 21! So excited but getting very nervous that I’m not properly prepared with my Vitamins and for the liquid diet and the prospect of never eating and drinking together again

Soooo…I’ve been sleeved! Overall, everything went well. I was in some pain in my abdomen when I woke up from surgery…and nauseated, too. Both of those sensations lasted for a few hours, but eventually went away (for the most part). I haven’t had much difficulty getting my fluids in. I believe I’ve consumed a total of 47 oz. since the surgery this morning. I’m just so relieved to have the surgery behind me!

Thanks Jenfs5 & Candace76 for sharing food ideas! Jenfs5–how did your surgery go?
Glad to hear your surgery went well.
My actual surgery, according to my Dr, went well. I barely remember being in recovery. The only real thing I remember was seeing someone I remember from when I worked at that hospital and saying that I remember her. She said she remembered me too lol. But I also remember tapping my hand on the bed rail saying help me help me... I believe I was in quite a bit of pain. But they gave me some pain meds and I guess it knocked me out. I didn't get up to my room until about 4pm. They were giving me toradol every 6 hours so i slept a lot. I had quite a bit of gas pain in my shoulder and neck. And my upper back was killing me, I though it was from laying so long but then realized it was the gas too. I did get up to walk some but not as much as I would have liked. I was hooked up to so many things it was a hassle getting up. I ended up staying 2 nights due to some sort of confusion with my discharge. But overall I think it was a good thing. It gave me an extra day of iv fluids and I was barely able to get anything down due to the cramping pain whenever I tried to drink. It also gave them time to find the blood clot in my arm. My whole hand and forearm swelled up so bad. I assumed my iv had infiltrated but when they finally listened to me and checked it it had not. So I had an ultrasound and they found the clot by my iv site. Luckily though I was already anticoagulated since I have a clotting disorder and once the iv was removed it only took a day for the swelling to subside. I'm still not getting enough liquids or Protein on but its slowly getting better. And my hubby made me some really good homemade broths. He has been so great taking care of me.

I wouldn't worry too much. It takes 6 to 8 hours for food to move out of your stomach and 36 hours for it to pass totally through your system. And the doctors don't even mess with anything beyond the stomach, so honestly I don't think they would have even known you ate it unless you told them. My doctor allows regular food like broccoli and carrots up until day 12, then day 13 (the day before surgery) is all liquids. You will be fine!

Welcome! I struggled the first two days on the diet, too, but then I got on track on the third day. Hopefully it will be the same for you!

Jenfs5, I'm so happy to hear that your surgery went well and that it is getting easier to drink your fluids. It sounds like your hubby is taking good care of you as you recover!💗 Hoping it continues to get easier to get the Protein & liquids in.

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! It does seem a little overwhelming to get prepared with all the Vitamins & shakes & supplies. I am making a schedule for all the vitamins and meds today since some need time between them. Hopefully, it will all become routine.

Not eating & drinking together may be one of the hardest things for me to get used to after surgery, giving up soda will be difficult, too, but I think that is easier than not drinking with a meal. I especially love my coffee with my breakfast! But I know it will be worth it to lose the weight!

Welcome & congratulations on your surgery! I am starting my pre op diet today! I'm sure it will be ok if you get back on track. We got this! It will be tough, but worth it to get a good start before our surgery.

Things moved quickly for me as well as mine wasn't covered. I think I started thinking that I wanted to have the surgery in April, had my first appointment in June, and have been getting prepped (appointments, buying what I need, etc.) since.

This forum has been so helpful for me, it is so inspiring to hear others experiences, and get great advice & support.

Good luck & keep us posted!

Hi NorthernMaine,

I hope you get more information to help figure out which surgery is best for you.

If you don't find anyone in this forum (July surgery/sleeve) that has experience with this, you may want to post this in the Bypass Forum or General Forum also, that way more people might view it & be able to share if they had a similar experience. 😊

Good luck with you surgery!

Thanks for welcoming me. What kind of things have you been buying?

Last night I watched a you tube video I found on Pinterest. She was talking about the top Ten things she's loving since her surgery. One was an Ice cube tray called "Supercubes." She also talked about her air fryer since she often has to reheat foods she could not eat all of. Then she talked about a "Habit Tracker." Any of you think this is important?

I feel like I'm finally talking to people who get it. I'm so happy I found this place -- I saw that another member has the same surgery date as me.

I started Habit tracking and Journaling, but I still need to get more consistent with both. I think they are both helpful activities. I also like watching videos on YouTube of people who have gone through this.

I need to get better at food Journaling, too.

I bought cups for the Protein Shakes, cups and a thermos for hot/warm liquids for the broth & Soups (one has a strainer), 4oz. containers, a motivational Water cup with time markers, Protein Shake powder & some ready to drink shakes, sf Jello, sf ice pops, broth, Protein fruit drink mixes, sf drink mixes (like crystal light), sf hard candy (I heard it may help right after surgery with dry mouth), Multivitamin, Calcium, prilosec, & collagen w/ hyaluronic acid.

After surgery I plan on ordering a food scale and mini travel food processor.

I am thinking about getting little 2 oz containers for jello, pudding, yogurt, & the very small portions in beginning.

I have an air fryer that I don't use much, but maybe will start using it more. I heard it is great for veggies.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
