Hi all

I’m about 6 weeks post op and to be brutally honest I haven’t been eating the best. I’m eating healthy things but so much of it I feel like I’m sabotaging this sleeve. I can’t stop snacking on Protein Bars and yogurt with granola. I drink and literally countdown the 30 minutes after I drink to snack. It’s definitely mental and don’t know how to stop. I’m also now having some blood sugar issues. I was on metformin for about 2 weeks post op was doing well, blood sugars ranging from 87-110. Now at 6 weeks my blood sugars have been creeping up. Now it’s at 185!

I hope I’m not the only one who went or is going through this. Could really use some advice.

Thanks
Mark

Before surgery, I was pre-diabetic, moving swiftly towards diabetes as my blood work over the past five years showed increasingly higher fasting glucose counts. Initially, post-surgery, I had great counts -- 74-83, but at six months, my blood glucose was almost back to pre-diabetic levels (95, 99), according to the lab, and even 104 on the glucose monitor.

I, too, am on a low carb diet. My surgeon and PCP have repeatedly told me not to worry about this yet, but I had expected much lower counts and apparently, like you, am an outlier because the overwhelming majority of WLS patients get fantastic blood glucose readings post-surgery. My A1C remains normal so far.

I did find, though, that the earlier I had my last meal the night before, the lower my blood glucose count the following morning has been. Also, I stopped taking a medication that sometimes can cause diabetes as a side effect. Make sure you're not taking any prescription that has that sort of effect.

a lot of WLS patients work with a therapist to help deal with those issues. Does your clinic have someone on staff or can they recommend someone for you to work with? Having WLS is pretty much the end of the line - the most drastic thing you can do to lose weight. Don't blow this chance. Do whatever you can to get some help with this.

Definitely consider seeing a therapist to figure out why you are snacking. on Protein Bars and granola. These sugary things really don't have a place in the post-op diet so soon after surgery. Go back to the information your surgery center provided you with. What does the diet look like? It should be Protein (from lean meats, fish, eggs, tofu, cheese, light greek yogurt, etc - not protein bars which are basically candy) and some vegetables. Definitely not granola! And make sure you're getting all your Water in; that can be a distraction when you want to snack.

I found myself eating more than I should be after surgery as well and I have been working on finding a therapist that deals with eating disorders. After a lot of calling around I finally found one that is in my state so I can do telehealth I am just waiting for the appointment since she as scheduling pretty far out. Talk to a therapist sooner than later to get to the bottom of any food addictions you have so you don’t miss the opportunity to take advantage of this tool.

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
