June Surgeries

My surgery was on 6/17. I wore the nightgown provided as the hospital did not allow me to bring many items. I did have an IV overnight. Once out of recovery and in my room I had to start drinking 4 ounces of Water every hour. The nurses are vigilant in making sure you do this. They wake you up to make sure you do this!! They helped me to the restroom with my IV bag in the middle of the night. But in the morning because I drank my fluids they discontinued my IV bag which was more than half empty. I was up by 5:30 am and started walking the nurses station by myself still had the IV bag but by 7am they removed it and did so almost every hour. I did shower and dressed in my going home clothes which were the same comfy clothes I wore coming to the hospital. I drank water all day long the day before surgery No food and 8oz of Gatorade at 11 pm the night before and 2hrs before arrival with meds prescribed by the doctor. I took my phone and charger along with my headphones which I never used. The only thing I did use was the lib balm so make sure you take lip balm. No time for music or talking on the phone. Your busy drinking, peeing and walking. Good luck with your surgery and with the new chapter you are about to embark on.

I guess each hospital is different. My surgery was scheduled for 10:15 am so I finished drinking at 8:15 and then my surgery was pushed back until 5:15 pm. Once I got the compression socks on and the iv set up they came in and talked to me and I don't remember anything else except waking up in my room because they were slapping me lol!

I took PJs but ended up staying in the gown they provided and the socks. They did not make me walk around other than going to the toilet. I had a wonderful night. I would have liked to have stayed longer but it wasn't necessary. I showered as soon as I got home and rested and walked the rest of that day. You will do just fine. Alot of this is being able to follow directions ie do what they tell you to do. Don't rush things. Take something for a sore throat if they allow it.

I am 2 weeks out today, gone from HW 246 SW 235 to CW 226. Have settled on 3 meals a day now with Protein Water in between, am hit and miss with my Water goal (MUST IMPROVE!!) but doing well with Protein.

I use the reminders, the calorie/macro tracker for protein goals, and the weight/measurement features mainly. I'm not really exercising yet or I'd hook Apple Watch up to it too. Sounds like you're doing great! I think my stall is very very slowly breaking still. I'm down to 250.2! I can't wait to see 249 on the scale. My body loves hanging on to weight at around the 250 mark. I am still happy with my overall loss though. My highest weight was 275, then I was 265 day of surgery (I did not have a pre-op diet, but still lost 10lbs in the three months leading up to surgery). So still down 15lbs in 3ish weeks, and 25 overall. Not a bad little start

I am not sure if I could have changed into my own nightgown. I didn't really ask and just stuck to hospital gown until I went home (they gave me two, one to put on the right way, and then one to put on backwards to cover up my behind while I walked).

I had an IV from the time I was checked in for surgery to when I went home. I actually had IV needles in both hands too, just in case one failed. Had to sleep with them, and walk around with the IV cart for gas pain.

I did not shower in the hospital. Did shower once I got home.

My surgeon wanted no food or drink past midnight the night before surgery. Had a Protein Shake for dinner that day too. After surgery I could drink as soon as I was awake (I know some people have had to wait a bit after and use those little sponges).

Ultimately though, everyone's surgeons seem to have different things they do, so I would recommend posing those questions to your surgeon/nurses. They'll be able to give you the policies for your hospital stay.

249.4 today! I am officially in the 240s! Haven't seen that in a while cause my body loves to hang around 250-252. Doing a little happy dance for scale victory. I am also starting to notice that I've been having to tighten the drawstring a bit on my PJs, otherwise they'll slowly fall off as I walk around. Haven't tried on any jeans yet because my belly button incision is still a little tender. Hoping for a nice surprise when I do. I don't expect a dramatic difference yet, but hopefully some of my pairs that had gotten tight will be back to fitting more normally and not leaving stamps on my stomach.

June 30th surgery went fabulous! Nearly no pain post-op, only mild discomfort. Grant it, they said I was the best VSG post op they have seen (maybe they were just being nice). But, I share for encouragement to others. I accredit this to a healthy, active lifestyle before surgery, and a phenomenal surgeon and surgical team. Home today, walking and small sips are super important (big sips hurt). Positive vibes for an equally smooth home recovery! Back to WFH tomorrow! lol. "Just keep swimming"

Anyone else having a rough time? I had surgery on June 22nd and even though the surgery went great I had to stay two nights because I couldn’t get off oxygen. Anesthesia is something I struggle with so this wasn’t too big of a surprise. I was home for 3 days before I ended up back in the hospital. After countless tests and a CT scan they found an air pocket pushing on my lungs making it hard to breath. I’ve been home now for two days and today was terrible. I experienced the stuck food feeling, terrible tummy/bathroom issues and overall sadness. I’m sure it doesn’t help that the entire time I was in the hospital no one gave me my thyroid medication or antidepressants. I’m feeling a lot of regret and never in a million years did I think I would feel this way.

Oh my goodness, that sounds really tough. I hope you're back on your meds now? Going through all that must be incredibly draining, thinking of you and hoping you feel better very soon. It seems a lot of people, even those who haven't had the tricky time that you have, feel sad or regretful in the first couple of weeks.

I really believe a lot of the emotional crap does get better, every day sees a huge improvement! I'm looking into getting a therapist who understands this stuff, as it can be a really lonely and confusing time.
