Hi Fellow Junies and of course anyone else. So, I thought I would share my very limited experience of about 42 hours ago.

For me, the hardest part the day of was not being able to drink any Water for so long the day of surgery. Also it was tough just sitting around waiting.

after surgery pain and gas pain was not as terrible as I thought it would be. I have only taken five tramadol tablets and pretty quickly switched to Tylenol. Last tramadol was last night so that I could sleep comfortably.

I tend to get nauseous very easily so I knew this would be the worst post surgery. Medical staff was quick to help and I really was only nauseous for about four hours. I had surgery - including hiatal hernia repair as an out patient and was able to tolerate the ride back to my hotel.

I walked every hour the first six hours and then every two hours for the next eight hours. Of course I complained when my family member got me up because all I wanted to do was sleep. How3ver, I’m so glad I got up and walked and walked and walked. Family member also did back percussions and that helped with removing the gas.

I haven’t felt hungry at all but really thirsty. I constantly am sipping Water - just have to do that rather than gulping water.

so far everything is going well and I’m excited use this tool so I can have a normal and active life.

how is everyone else doing?

Thanks so much for your perspective of the first day or so after surgery. It was great to hear the pain was pretty manageable. I haven't done well on any prescription pain medications as they typically make me very nauseous and cause me to vomit, so, I'm really hoping to only stick to Tylenol for pain relief. Glad to hear you have a family member getting you up to walk. I keep hearing this is such an essential part after surgery. Hope recovery continues to go well!

I've got 8 days remaining of my liquid pre-op diet. Tuesday was definitely the day I felt the most hungry. Since then it hasn't been quite as bad. I do find myself looking longingly at food wishing I could just have the tiniest bite. My family has been super supportive and understanding though and have been helping to keep me on track. I'm hoping this last little bit will fly by. Still trying to stay super busy and try to keep my mind off of it.

Glad you are doing so well. I think I have gone overboard watching youTube videos and have myself pretty scared. Did you suspect you had the hernia before they told you? That seems to be the most pain for some people. Did you have surgery in Vegas? I am scheduled on the 15th there. Keep us posted!

I had to finally walk away from most of the FB groups, support boards and YouTube channels as I didn't want to scare myself before surgery. It's already really nerve wracking to think I am choosing to have this surgery rather than it being a medical emergency. My primary care doctor put it into good perspective though - she said "isn't it nice that you can choose to have a surgery that may help you avoid needing a surgery you don't have a choice about in the future?" I keep reminding myself it is a pretty straightforward surgery and most people get through it without any issues. People get on a lot of those groups and do videos looking for help with the issues the are having...all the others are out there living life! I feel like it's important to be aware of the slim possibility of complications, but, chances are not many are going to have them. Maybe step away from some of the videos until after surgery? Hang in there!

My surgery date is June 10th. Just started my liquid pre-surgery diet. Any recommendations?

Stay busy!! I have found the key is distraction. I have had a lot of people tell me to drink lots of Water, but, I find that doesn't do anything for me with regards to silencing the hunger. I try to ensure I stay as physically distracted as I can, stay out of the kitchen when my family is making their food and have been focusing on getting lots of extra sleep. There's no easy way through it that I have found...just be stubborn and stay focused on the goal at the end.

I’m leaving to fly home in about three hours. Dreading the flight but anxious to shower in my own bathroom and sleep in my own bed.

I had sleeve and hernia repair on Tuesday afternoon, and feeling really great. Others have mentioned nausea and so I’d like to share my tips since I get nauseas so easily.

pre Surgery I was given zofran and Pepcid in IV. They also gave me a patch to wear behind my ear and sea bands for my wrists. After surgery I alternated between zofran and phenegrin by IV and then orally. I was discharged just a few hours after surgery so worried I wouldn’t be able to swallow pills ,but strangely that hasn’t been a problem for me.

I was also given “queues ease clip on” to wear and that helped a lot. They can be purchased on Amazon and you just clip to shirt and the aromatherapy is mild but effective. I also find that rubbing Vicks baby rub under my nose helps as well and plan on using that on the plane. It’s invisible so you won’t feel like Claire’s from Silence of the Lambs.

Since I get nauseas when laying down, I walked as much as I could and my companion did back percussions which helped a lot and felt good.

I know this journey is not easy, and that I’m far from perfect, but I am going to try as hard as this 62 year old body will allow to take advantage of this tool I’ve been given.

Good luck to everyone. I know we can all do this!

Hello [emoji4]
I am scheduled for June 16. I'm very nervous (anxious) but excited. Yesterday I started the pre-op diet. It's making me even more anxious but I'm glad I found this group [emoji2]

The pre-surgery diet they gave me was called "semi-liquid." It was about 1000 calories, 90g Protein and 90g carbs. I was supposed to do it for 14 days, but I started it 12 days ahead instead. I did it pretty well, but I did sneak in a chicken sausage on a Greek pita the last day.
My surgery went ahead as planned, so I wouldn't worry about them cancelling.

Yes! I am scheduled for June 16. Started the pre-op diet yesterday. Today is not going well but this has to be done. I like to put positive thoughts in my head like: in 12 days I will start my second chance at the rest of my life [emoji4]

I'm so used to stuffing my face when I'm stressed, but I'm determined to make this work. Not receiving alot of support from my husband right now. He had a heart attack in September 20 so I'm not pushing it. That's partly why I'm getting this done NOW!

I had surgery on June second as well. The day of the surgery and the next day we're bad for me, nausea and gas pains. I noticed that walking helps me feel better little by little. Hang in there! You will start feeling better in no time.

I had my surgery June 3rd. Apparently, I lost more blood than average and my BP went way low during the procedure. He also found a blood clot on my spleen. I have no idea what that will mean.

I was on bedrest (not allowed to get up at all) for the first day. Finally got to get up to walk and try to pee without a catheter yesterday.

My gas pain is pretty bad - probably because I had to wait so long to walk. Today is post-surgery day 2, I guess. The pain is worst when I'm getting up from being seated or lying down. Have only had Water so far, but that's all I've been wanting. Been finally passing gas, so that's good.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
