Coffee after gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

there seems to be no consensus at all among surgeons about caffeinated coffee. Some say never drink it again for the rest of your life. Some patients are allowed to drink it while they're still in the hospital. Some say it's fine to drink it as long as you limit it to 1 or 2 cups. Some are OK with it after the first month - or three months - or six months. And some are a combo of the last two. Check with your surgeon. Mine allowed us to have a limited amount (1-2 cups a day) once we were six months out, but like I said, surgeon opinion seems to be all over the place with this.

My take on coffee is that if folks want to drink it post-op, they will. If they don't, they won't. I've ultimately seen very few converts from one side to the other.

I could give or take coffee. Both before surgery and after, I could go months or years without a drop, then go months at a time doing a pot or two a day, then back to nothing in a day. I don't think I've had more than a 5 cups in in the last 5 years. I guess the mood hasn't struck.

Don't be like me, if you do it, be moderate. Or not. I don't do anything by halves.

My surgeon said ideally no coffee for a year, and I honored that. At the one-year mark, I went back with a vengeance and now drink three cups a day with no problems.

I guess I'm a rebel who started back on coffee a month after bypass. I limit it to 2 cups in the morning, use sugar free coffee creamer and I'm a much happier person for it. I'm all about the long term sustainability of my weight loss, so I don't want to give up and/or deprive myself of the small pleasures like coffee.

coffee makes me feel unwell after my bypass, but I can drink decaff (1 cup a day).

I drink two cups of coffee per day with no problems. I have a Decaf in the morning with Coffee Mate and one teaspoon of sugar, and a small iced coffee (sometimes with caffeine, sometimes not) that lasts me the rest of the day. And yes, I drink it through a straw with zero problems. :)

My Dr allowed it at my 6 week appointment. I'm allowed up to 2 cups a day but was cautioned to be careful of milk, Creamer etc.. as it can add a lot of calories. Each cup is 2 Tbs 1/2 and 1/2 and sugar free Syrup. Until I hit maintenance I also mixed in Protein, Fiber, and collagen and had that as my Breakfast.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
