1 month post-op, kinda skimpy WL

Recommended Posts

Today is officially my 1 month post bypass, and I've only lost 16lbs. I had a gnarly 2.5 week stall, but I barely eat anything- I feel like I should be losing more. 16 lbs. in a month is nothing to sneeze at, but I thought It'd be a little more. Are my expectations too high? I've been struggling to get in enough fluids too. Just feeling a bit disheartened.

When I spoke to my team, they said they expect about 2lbs a week and anything extra is a bonus. I was surprised that that is the goal even right after surgery!

I lost 15 pounds on my two week pre-op diet. I lost 15 pounds my first month post-op. Then another 15 the second month. And another 15 each, months 3 & 4. Slowed down to around 10 after that. I was also disappointed with my weight loss that first month, but boy did it add up quick. I am a bit shy of 7 months post-op and a bit shy of my first goal weight.

Just stick with the plan, and be kind to yourself! 💕

Weight loss varies for everyone, but I have seen/read from 10 to 12 is average . 15 lbs. is great! Remember your body is going thru a lot of adjustments. Be patient and follow the plan. You are doing GREAT! 😃

I also lost 16 lbs the first month, and I was heavier than you are. And yes - your expectations are too high. Most of us seem to lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month. Of course, you'll always find outliers, but they are the exception. I think people's expectations are shaped by shows like "My 600 lb Life", but you have to remember that the people on that show start out MUCH heavier than your average WLS patient. And the more you have to lose, the faster it goes - or at least at first. You are fine. You're within the average range!

I lost 16 pounds in my first two weeks and have lost nothing since (29 days later). I am losing inches though, did you do before/during measurements?

Hi Suzy, I agree with what others have said. Also, I noticed you said you hardly eat anything. Make sure you know from your nutritionist how many calories and Protein you should consume daily. Not enough can slow or stall weight loss.

Thank you for the reassurance. I wasn't basing my expectations on 600lb life, but on info from this site and others like it. I am eating, and generally making my Protein goals etc. I just so often feel kinda pukey when I eat, drink, or take my meds that I struggle with making myself do it. I'm still learning to sip and space out my meals adequately. These technical details are a lot harder than I was expecting- I was not a big bite person anyway, but I could sit and eat a meal without it getting cold by the time I was done. Just more learning curve.

re: that article - I've been hanging out on bariatric forums for six years. I've never seen anyone lose 15 lbs a week. Maybe 5 lbs a week for the first two or three months. I never lost that much, though. I was 16 lbs the first month, maybe 12 or 13 for the next two months, and then gradually down from there...

I think it’s a typo & should be 15-25 pounds a month not a week as it says on the website. Even people on My 600 Pound Life don’t lose 100 pounds a month. When they get down to the 200s they’re told they’ll be losing about 15 pounds a month.

You’re doing well. Celebrate every pound you lose.

Good luck.

If you lose a lot weight in the few weeks before weight loss surgery it very likely you won't lose as much as someone who doesn't have a strict pre-op liquid diet. All that Fluid retention/bloat etc has already gone before surgery.

That said you are doing great, everyone is different, some will have lost less than you in the first month and others will have lost more. As long as you are following your post op guidelines all is good.

i just want to report that i have finally seen some weight loss!! I am 16 days post gastric by pass

for the first week i weighed more post op than on the day of surgery

have now lost 11 lbs which i guess is ok .My calori e intakei s 450daily ,70 grm Protein and 2-3 litres of water

have no problem eating but i have devloped a haematoma at the main incision site ,it is swollen and painful if I walk too much but doctor says it should re absorb on its own

So to anyone else like myself who gets a bit of a fright when they come out of hospital weighing more than when they go in ,just to let you know it comes off eventually. I guess the thing to remember is that this surgery is not a magic bullet. You still have to restrict your, intake and ensure adequate protein intake, the best result for me from the surgery so far is that I am not hungry at all and I can only tolerate small amounts of food at a time . So good luck everybody in your journey and success to us all,we have done a brave thing and we will make it!!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
