surgeons are literally all over the board with this one. Some don't want you to drink it ever again in your life, some are OK with you drinking it before you even leave the hospital. Some allow it after a certain amount of time (e.g., at three months out - or six months out), some are OK with it right away but want you to limit it to something like 1-2 cups a day. There doesn't seem to be consistency AT ALL with this. You'd probably be better off asking your surgeon his/her preference, since you're bound to get a bunch of very different answers here.

I don't think it is coffee, but caffeine. I could have decaffeinated coffee and tea. I did ask my surgeon at my 6 month checkup and he said one or two cups (caffeinated coffee) are OK, just don't go nuts with it.

Funny thing, but as a former coffee addict, after surgery it tasted like mud! I couldn't stand it. I avoided all caffeine and acidic drinks after surgery to avoid ulcers (I got one anyway), and after two years it started to smell/taste good again. So now I drink only Decaf, with unsweetened soy milk, and only with a meal - not on an empty stomach. And not every day. So far, no more stomach problems 2 years out. So you may be surprised and not even like it post op.

I didn't drink coffee for a while but after a few months, I started a daily routine of getting a large cup, where about 2/3 can be filled up with my Keurig coffee and the rest of the room I pour in my Premier Protein shake. The Cafe Latte flavor is perfect, but sometimes I mix it up with chocolate or vanilla. It takes me a while to finish it and that's all the coffee I drink in a day. The rest of the day, I usually drink Gatorade Zero.

I was an immediate coffee drinker- I started within a week of surgery with a single shot of espresso in skim milk, and I have since had black coffee as well as two shots of espresso daily. Never had any problems or intolerance.

My surgeon didn’t really have an opinion on coffee. He seems a lot more concerned about a lengthy liquids only phase and abstaining from sugar.

I had coffee within the first week. I usually drink it black but started with a dash of milk in it. I had surgery 2 weeks ago tomorrow and I am back to black coffee already.

I had decaffeinated in the hospital the day after surgery. I started having one small (8 ounce) cup of regular coffee in the mornings about two weeks out with a splash of sugar free Creamer and a pack of Splenda. I'm now 7+ months out now and drink two small cups every morning. I also have the Cafe Latte flavor Premier Protein shake for Breakfast most mornings and that also has caffeine in it. I was an crazy coffee drinker before the surgery. Usually 40-60 ounces a day.

What I was told is Coffee is a diuretic and right after surgery you can get dehydrated easily. I was just very careful to get enough H2O.

My doctor said no coffee after surgery, but when I went back for my follow up, he didn't seem to mind that much if I was drinking it or not. I think it only mattered to him right after surgery. So I drink it now but in moderation.

Mark me down as another semi-immediate coffee drinker.

I have had one 500ml thermos of black coffee every morning since 1 month op. I would sometimes have a smaller second (or third!) cup later in the day/night (but not always).

I heart coffee.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
