Exercises for Flexibility?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am pre-op but my mobility is really slowing down. I have been noticing for awhile that my flexibility was steadily getting worse. What I have to do to tie my shoes is ridiculous, and getting down (let alone back up) from the floor is a tragic thing to do, let alone have witnesses. I know that most of that is due to my weight and where my weight is.

For 9 months know I have been struggling is terrible knee weakness and pain. I got an under the desk cycle thing which is helping with the pain some and I do feel better that I am getting more exercise and movement. I know it is not much - but it is a lot more than I am used to doing. Going for long walks - or just walking my hilly driveway is something that I aspire too, but I am not anywhere near there yet.

Does anyone know of other equipment or exercises (something that I can watch on YouTube or something) that might help with my flexibility?

Does anyone know if having WLS will help with flexibility issues? I know that WLS won't fix all of it - but I don't know where to start.

Thank you

Try Yoga. You can find some beginner poses on UTube.

I don’t have any advice on exercises, but I will say that for me, weight loss has greatly improved my flexibility and mobility. At my highest weight, I couldn’t tie my shoes while they were on my feet. Now, it’s effortless to bend down and tie my shoes. Everything is easier — getting up from the floor or chairs, going up and down stairs (I can climb stairs without holding the handrails now), walking, climbing over/under/around stuff — without the extra 150 pounds. I do still have some knee issues (stiffness when I sit for a long time, aches/pain when I stand for a long time, and I still can’t squat all the way down), but that has also improved with less weight stressing my knees.

Try Popsugar Fitness on YouTube (free videos). Yoga and Barre would both be great for improving flexibility (and increasing core strength)!

I agree with others - yoga. Start off with very gentle ones (there are lots of videos on youtube - i know a lot of people seem to like the "Yoga with Adrienne" series, but there are tons of others, too). Yin yoga (one of the many types of yoga) is very gentle. Or really any video that's labeled "gentle" is probably do-able for you...

For gentle yoga, I searched for yoga for seniors. It's got some easy starter moves that will help with the flexibility while not killing you with the up and down and up and down.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
