Feeing Rough and Sleeve Blush

Recommended Posts

So I had my VSG on the 24th. Since then I am feeling rough. I felt better this morning but after that, I started feeling crappy. My incisions hurt (they sent me home with no pain meds!) and the gas pain is still unreal. I’m up and walking almost every hour that I am awake but I’m quite exhausted a lot. Also my face and chest turned red but was told this is a sleeve blush. It can happen from healing or having a reaction to the Anesthesia. I’m trying to get down all my Water but it’s rough. I’m definitely in the “what did I do phase.” Kind of feel like crying. Sigh. I know I’ll get over this but right now I just feel weak and in pain.

I keep seeing people post on here about being sent home without pain meds and I just don't get it. VSG is major surgery and just because some people say they don't need pain meds, that doesn't mean everyone will have that experience. Call your surgeon's office immediately (wake the on-call doctor up if necessary) and tell them you're in pain. Managing your post-op pain is part of their job. You need a prescription. Out of control pain is bad for healing and you should not have to tough it out. Seriously, call now. They dropped the ball.

I agree with @Jaelzion. My doctor gave me my prescription before surgery so I would already have them for when I get home. Although I didn’t need them, everyone is different and your doctor should have better prepared you for the what if’s.

This is a new term for me. Did your Surgeon/Team tell call it this or another patient?

Also if you have no contraindications, ask (your Surgeon/Team) to have your pain managed with medications, even if it's just Tylenol.

I called. Unfortunately, my surgeon isn’t on call so I went ahead and took a tablet of Tylenol as the nurse said to do. I put a heating pad on. That seems to help. I am still feeling a bit groggy from the Anesthesia which I heard lasts the first 48 hours. At least that is what the nurse told me. And yes, I told them about the redness but they said it was more than likely a reaction from the anesthesia and to contact my doctor on Monday. I could go to the ER but with covid being so bad, I’m too scared. Right now I feel okay. Just groggy. I am hoping to not feel so rough tomorrow.

It just seems like everything was closed for the holidays as I had mine on Christmas Eve.

I’m still using the bathroom, trying to get all my liquids in, and had my first bm. I am walking. Hoping to be all clear tomorrow.

Hope you get manage to get your pain under control. I too had buyers remorse for the first week. I didn’t have a lot of pain, however I struggled with a constant thirst that couldn’t be quenched. I think the Protein Water caused that. However each day has got easier and each eating stage has brought new challenges, but from what I have read on these forums, it takes around 3 months to start getting used to the new normal.

Also I have anxiety and am afraid of something going wrong.

Perhaps a visible reminder like making a list can help. List all the things that are going well vs questionable. Then perhaps you can narrow down the issues you need immediate advice on from your team about.

Good Luck ♥️

The good news is that it's all temporary and short-term. You'll feel really, really good in about 7-10 days. It's worth it.

Hang in there! For most people, the first week after surgery is the worst part of the whole journey, but once you get through it, it’s mostly smooth sailing. A lot of us have those feelings of regret in the beginning. I remember waking up from my surgery thinking, “Why did I do this to myself?” and wishing I could go back in time and cancel the surgery. Five months later, I’m seeing great results and so many improvements in my health and my life, and I’m so glad I did this. It’s hard right now, but you have a lot to look forward to!

Thank you all. I’m feeling better today. I’m trying to get my Proteins in and my liquids but it’s a bit hard. I was able to take a shower today and drink half a Premier Protein drink. I’m able to walk and my incisions are looking good. I guess I just get anxiety. Sometimes I get hiccups which make me nervous but I am hoping a couple more days and I will feel more normal.

Yes!!! Hiccups here too!! It freaks me out! I asked another girl I know that had bypass and she said the first couple weeks she did a lot of burping and hiccuping. That made me feel better about it. 🥴

That’s so good to hear. I’m also a bit shaky, weak, and feel kind of dizzy/tired. I will call my surgeon tomorrow to make sure what I’m feeling is normal but I’m okay walking. I think having anxiety and wondering if I’m okay doesn’t help. My temp is normal, I haven’t vomited, etc. thanks to everyone who hasput up with my questions on here.

Oh girl! Don’t you apologize! This is new, scary, different! So many different feelings! Having anxiety makes it even more challenging. I’ve been *trying to keep mine in check, but you know how that goes. 🙄 Especially with pain. I feel like when I’m in pain, it exacerbates my anxiety to an all new level!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
