So you New WLS people Make it/ Survive

Recommended Posts

So for all of you who had it done this year How was you first Eating Fest Holiday Survival? I saw all the posts prior to thanksgiving worried and confused as to how to handle it. Vets pass on your experiences also - So how did you first T Day go?

I will start Mine- Well this is my second thanksgiving so I new what to expect, Cooked 5 Turkeys feed the army of family friends and then vacuum sealed all the leftovers. I picked and nibbled but never even had a plate down just used a little ramicon throughout the day. No mental problems No issues. Way better the last year my first turkey day, was stressed and aggravated and mostly jealous of those pounding down pounds of food. Now not a issue

So Friday took all the college kids (had Notre dame, University of Florida, FGCU, Sienna, and Ohio state Represented) out fishing, Great more food and vacuum sealing. Just for the fun of it Fish picture Now Post op I am the one behind the two kids kneeling down and the other one is a PRE WLS pic photo - Now eating a pound of fried fish I do miss - Hope everyone had a good holiday

Treated it like a regular Thursday. With COVID, no family gathering. Made a pot roast for me and Keto sausage balls for hubby. No food focus. Stayed on track.

This was actually my 2nd Thanksgiving. The first one, I was able to eat so little that it was a non-issue. I had a couple bites of turkey and that was it, LOL.

This time, I knew I was going to allow myself to have some of my faves and I did. I tasted everything and had a good time reaquainting myself with those traditional dishes. Then the next day it was right back to my normal way of eating. I gained a little Water weight, but no major harm done. 😁

This was my first year. I just made a small plate with one or two bites of a few things that I wanted and I was completely fine. Didn't have any cravings to overeat and I got to have a taste of everything I wanted. I was also busy chasing 3 young kids around so that may have helped.

I haven't made it to the chicken/turkey phase yet, so I had green bean casserole, mashed potato and black Beans only. It wasn't bad since I'm still recovering from the surgery. Looking forward to Christmas when I can finally add turkey too!

This is also my second holiday season. Am Canadian, so my first big holiday event after surgery was xmas 2018. I don't remember it being too, too, difficult, but I do remember making sure that my couple fl oz of wine I served myself lasted basically the entire night, due to a really bad dumping experience about a week or so prior.

Here is what I ate that day. I would have been 2 moths post op. At the time, it was a "big calorie day", comparatively, at least.

In all, i was perfectly happy to be around fam and friends rather than stuffing myself with food like I did before.

I was worried about it but in the end felt pretty satisfied. I had a plate with a couple bites of stuffing, mashed potatoes/gravy, and cranberry sauce. I'm not a big turkey person so didn't miss that. I did later have a couple bites of pecan pie goo...and subsequently had horrible dumping syndrome. I'm honestly glad that sugar is out for me...it's y achilles heel.

First Thanksgiving home was definitely a different one. I mean come on, nothing about 2020 is even a little bit normal !

I was only 2 days post surgery and thought I would sleep the day away but not the case at all! I got up and made my hubby a chicken with all the fixings including pumpkin pie.

I had no desire to even taste the gravy but the thought of a pumpkin pie liquid something did cross my mind!

Today is a week out and I do not even find myself thinking about food. I have a reminder set on my phone so I get my Water and Protein Drinks in .....

I feel like Thanksgiving didn't really count. It was just my immediate family, and I had sushi for dinner! LOL!! I think that Christmas will be similar (and last Christmas I was 1 week post op so didn't eat anything), so my true test will be my first big family party with lots of appys and Desserts. Especially as my restriction has loosened up recently. Gotta keep it full with Protein so the other stuff doesn't stand a chance!!

It was just my immediate family so wasn’t too big of a deal. I will say though I ate way too much. I never actually made a plate but had bites and tastes all day. I’m only 7 weeks post op and felt full and awful for a whole day after. I have to plan and measure my meals or I end up eating too fast then feeling ill.

As an alternative, I’ve read many others use Baristatic App

I had one plate. My plates are a lot different then they use to be. You could actually see the bottom of the plate at some parts lol.i even had a couple different bites of dessert. Ive developed a great relationship with food at this point. I know i can have some extra carbs on days like that and be just fine. Made sure i hit the gym the next day and all is well. I enjoyed myself and come monday, the scale was still in the same place. Hope everyone had a great day!!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
