2 week pre op how did you guys feel.?

Recommended Posts

It gets better on day 3. You might want to try a different shake (unless your surgeon tells you what shake to use). I used Premier Protein shakes primarily and also had Swanson Bone Broth and Jello.

I had a headache for the first 5 days of the liquid diet. After that it went smoothly. The hardest part is the beginning of this diet. Make sure to get as much Water in along with electrolytes. When I had my Pre-op blood testing it showed that my electrolytes were slightly low. I made sure to add a bit of extra salt and electrolytes and that helped the headache I had as well.

You will feel light headed heck i do all the time - My suggestion is to keep you fluids high. Lots of electrolytes as for the shake I truly promote making your own. Once you master that you will be so dang happy you will not believe it

Throw in some sugar free Jello and some sugar free popsicles and that might help.

This thread has been really helpful. Last week I was given the green light to have surgery on 4th January. It was my first visit to the surgeon! I have one week of the liquid and steamed veg right over the Christmas and New Year period which doesn't really bother me. Last December I gave up alcohol, if I can do that I can do anything!

Last night at my husbands Christmas party I met a lady who had the gastrectomy in May this year. She gave me some good advice on the liquid pre op period. The Optifast puddings keep you satisfied longer and it was recommended by her bariatric dietician. That and Powerade Zero (we are in Australia so not sure what the US equivalent is).

Hello! I am so glad I came across this post. 7 day fasting on day 2. My head is pounding. Thought I could do without the Powerade. Definitely getting some tomorrow. Is it okay to take Tylenol during the fast?

I used a lot of Himalayan salt added to broth along with the broth of some high salt Progresso Soups. Those seemed to help a lot. Also if you can find it, sugar free Pedialyte should help even more as Pedialyte has a lot more electrolytes than Powerade.

Im on day 10 and have 13 more to go... Ive gotten use to it now... first 3 days was hell.

Oooh I start on Monday. Any tips for the newbies? A person I met only two weeks ago was saying she felt more satisfied with the Optifast puddings, and they are the same nutritional value as the shakes.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
