Not losing weight on purées

Recommended Posts

I moved up from liquids to purées on Friday. On liquids, I lost 11 lbs. But ever since I started purées I’ve gone up 1 lb. and it hasn’t gone back down. On Friday, all I ate all day was a quarter of an avocado and a quarter cup of oatmeal with Protein Powder mixed in. Yesterday, all I ate was 2 tbsp. hummus, 1 Greek yogurt cup, and 2 tbsp. PB2. Today it’s been pretty much the same: a quarter cup of oatmeal, 2 tbsp. hummus, and 2 tbsp. PB2. How is it that I’ve stopped losing weight on this little food? I just don’t see how it’s possible. I can understand that on the first day maybe my body just decided to hang tightly onto every calorie because it’s been starving, but I haven’t had more than 300-400 calories a day since I started purées and it doesn’t make sense to me how I’m not losing weight. Has this happened to anyone else? I’m becoming more than a little afraid to eat.

You’re likely in a stall. They’re very, very common. The first one usually occurs around week 3 but it can begin before or after that. I thought of them as my body needing a breath to catch up with all the changes - the surgery, the reduced & changed diet, the weight loss, etc.

They can last one week or a couple of weeks & you’ll have a couple of them on your journey. You will start to lose weight again. Just relax & stick to your plan.

Good luck & congrats on your surgery.

Welcome to your first stall. They will happen FREQUENTLY (at least in my own experience). Your body has been through a lot and sometimes it needs to catch up with itself so it stalls you weight loss to do so. Your weight may even fluctuate back and forth from 1-3 pounds. It happens. stalls generally last between 1-3 weeks but can go on for longer (my longest two were 23 and 27 days respectively). Try not to stress about it because it's NORMAL (almost impossible not to do, I know). My first stall was at month 3 and it was the 23 day one. I questioned ever little thing I did and, yes, I thought 'am I doing something wrong?' but if you stick with your diet plan and just ride it out the weight loss will kick back up again naturally. In the 9.5 months since my surgery I've lost 110 pounds, so it DOES work. Some months you'll lose more than others, but you'll still lose.

it's the infamous "three-week stall". If you do a search on this site for it, you will literally find over 15,000 posts on it. Almost everyone has that. Just stick to your plan and stay off the scale for a few days. It typically lasts 1-3 weeks. Your weight loss WILL start up again. And just so you know, you're likely to go through several of these on your journey.

Have you noticed any non-scale victories? Are your clothes fitting better? My nutritionist said that the body fills empty cells with Water, which weigh more than fat (or something like that) but you should see differences in your measurements (which is why she recommends taking measurements...which I did not do!). I found that during my stalls is when most people noticed my weight loss!

Thanks for the input, everyone. As of today I wasn’t stalled anymore... but I’m eating less than I should, and that’s probably why.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
