Portion size

Recommended Posts

I am in the liquid stage soon coming to the pureed stage.

What portion sizes do you do for each meal ? It seems like a obvious question but my diet plan wasnt very clear on it. It mentions to measure out ur meals ...

I dont feel much of a restriction to be honest, I just stop myself because I am afraid of puking. I imagine a couple of months out measuring meals is gonna be real important with my hunger coming back.

thanks.

Probably good to call your nutritionist to confirm, but my Dr. had me on 2 oz when I hit pureed stage. I didn't really feel any restriction until I got to Pureed by the way. Once I did reach that stage, sometimes I could eat the whole 2 oz and some times I could not even come close...

2 ounces I hope it fills me up. I have 4 ounce measuring cups so....

I was gonna try ricotta bake everyone keeps talking about so its full of cheese, doesnt sound healthy at all.

you should feel the restriction once you get to solid foods.

2 oz or 1/4 cup is about what most people start with, and sometimes not even that much. Do not chase the restriction. That's a bad habit to get into, as some foods never make you feel restricted. Go with measurements and calories for now. Of course, if you feel suddenly full, then STOP, no matter how much you've had.

Portion size will likely depend on your surgery and surgeon/dietician requirements as well as restriction. I had a sleeve and as I progressed from liquids (where a lot won't feel any resriction at all due to liquids passing through the stomach quickly) to pureed foods, max was 1/2 cup if I was able to consume that much.

My portion size was 8 Tablespoons(1/2 Cup) over 30 minutes meal time. When I first started I could only finish 5 spoons and get full or run out of time. By the end of puree stage I could finish 7-8 Tablespoons of puree food in 25 minutes.

My plan calls for 2 oz./ 1/4 cup for pureed stage with 4-5 meals per day and 1 Protein Shake. Protein goals is 60 G. It is hard to hit that without a shake. 4 weeks on this phase until my nutrition class. I use My Fitness Pal app to log food and track protein. I did a similar thing to the ricotta bake but made bottom layer of ramekin ground turkey and spinach, then ricotta layer, then sauce and light sprinkle of parmesan. 1 ramekin makes 2 meals for me of 2 oz. 92 cals and 12 G protein each meal.

That sounds good. Do you use a hand blender to purée the turkey and spinach?

Before my surgery, I was really good about measuring everything and only eating what was allowed. But since my surgery in September, I just get my food (high Protein, low carbs) in a portion that I think I can eat, but I eat slowly, and as soon as I get that uncomfortable feeling, I stop and give my plate to my dog🐕. She has learned that she'll get fed something good every time I eat, so she stays right by my side waiting for it :) What I end up actually eating is a fraction of what I used to eat, and still about half of what I think I can eat now. I think the most important thing that I can do is to train myself to put my fork down when I am full and not feel obligated to clean my plate.

1/4 cup at first, then 1/2 cup later on.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
