Protein Intake Help lactose allergy

Recommended Posts

Hello All

I am new to this forum. I am 6 weeks post op and have lost about 30 lbs. My issue is that I need to have an intake of 90 grams Protein and am not hitting it. I am eating protein rich food weighing everything, drinking shakes and eating yogurt. My problem is that most Protein Shakes make me fill ill. Even the yogurt turns my stomach. I am also allergic to milk so everything is lactose and milk free. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't drink milk often because it can make me gassy/upset stomach so for my one week pre-op diet, I'm using vanilla unsweetened almond milk and Orgain vegan Protein Powder. I like mixing the chocolate and Peanut Butter flavors because it cuts down on the sweetness. The resulting "shake" is really yummy. It's best blended to keep out the lumpies.

Protein water! 500ml between 12-20g of protein per bottle. Bit expensive but I find it really helps & counts towards my Fluid intake. Most are fruit flavoured, no fat, no sugar. I'm in the UK so won't reccomend brands as you might not have them but I found some good ones on Amazon (although I try not buy there, they were cheaper)

Fairlife low-fat milk. Higher in Protein, and no lactose due to ultra filtration. I have lactose intolerance and it does not cause me issues. Good luck!

Use plant based Protein powder and shakes. such as Orgain with 20 gm of protein. Ripple milk is great with 8 gm per cup. I developed a whey intolerance after surgery and don't consume any dairy products now. 90 gm of protein is a lot for a woman. My surgeon's guidelines for women were as follows:

60 inches tall (5 ft): 50 - 60 gms per day

65 inches ( 5 ft 5 in): 60 - 65 gm per day

70 inches (5 ft 8 in): 65 - 70 gm per day

Only very tall men need to get in 90 gm/day per my surgeon. So I wouldn't worry too much if you can't get in that much.. Anyway, I use soy or oat milk yogurt, Ripple milk, and plenty of legumes. I have no problem getting in my protein every day. It's not hard, even being lactose intolerant.

I'm mixing vega sport plant based Protein powder in yogurt and it's good. You can mix it into Ripple milk for added protein (higher protein plant based milk) they also make a yogurt. I find Greek yogurt with digestive enzymes doesn't upset my dairy intolerance. As long as it's low sugar. Oikos triple zero has been good. Take chewable digestive enzymes and that helps a lot too. Also the right whey protein shouldn't cause stomach upset. I've used PEScience select and not had issues.

I forgot to add it helps to calculate your baseline Protein using the ratio of 0.36 grams of protein per 1 lb body weight. To know you are getting enough. But not necessarily too much.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
