Should I still have surgery?!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm scheduled for sleeve on 11/18. I'm 5'6" and now 213lbs before my pre op diet in the next 2 weeks. I was 231 starting in May. If I loose 10 lbs on pre op liquid diet I'll be 203. I figure 50 more lbs may be doable on my own. Is this just nerves or is it not enuf lbs to have surgery! Help

Nobody here can answer you on this?

1. Have you tried to loss weight and failed?

2. Does your eating habits are unhealthy?

3. Do you think you can stay on a healthy diet for life?

Good luck deciding. Another factor to consider is weight loss retention. Many have lost weight successfully on their own without surgery yet gained it back (or more in my case).

I see what you mean - I'm a yo-yo dieter, and could probably lose much of that remaining 50 lbs myself, but I know from past experience that it all goes back on again, slowly and gradually. Wls was a last resort for me. You could always postpone the date and give it a go yourself before finally committing?

You may be experiencing nerves. Maybe not.

Maybe you are taking a well deserved final look at where you are and where you want to be and how you want to get from here to there. Having your innards rearranged is a drastic step so it's in your best interest to ensure you've exhausted all the non-surgical options.

Either way you go it still comes down to you. Either way, you will need to follow a pretty strict food plan. It's a plan you will need to maintain for the rest of your life. What about VSG will make it more likely that you will be able to maintain your new healthy lifestyle? You must look into yourself with an honest assessment.

Good luck,

Tek

I know for me, I was once overweight at 170ish pounds, then in the low 200s, then 250s. I always thought I could do it on my own. I'd lose some, then gain more back until I eventually ended up at 393 pounds. I wish I would have done this when I was in my 20s and in the 200s instead of waiting until I was 48. I'm not saying you can't do it on your own, but if your story is anything like mine, it could be exceedingly hard. Even WITH surgery, it's hard. This is just a tool to help you.
I just know if I had done this years ago I might not have ended up at almost 400 pounds.

I had similar thoughts, but I knew from decades of experience (I'm in my 60s), that if I lost weight, I'd always gain it back. If you're one who can lose it and keep it off, then you may be fine on your own. But I never could.

I am in the same position now rethinking my decision as I get closer to getting my surgery. I have to keep reminding myself that I have lost weight and regain over and over for years, my original decision to start this journey was more about being able to maintain the weight loss long term. It is the long term success that I think will be achievable with the surgery that keeps me focused, nerves and all. Good Luck to you.

I did it! 2/3 and am 9 days post op. The worst of it was pulling my back out, hoisting my body up in hospital bed. I hardly feel like I've had surgery now. I'm glad I did it and thank you for all your support.

Because I’ve been a yo yo dieter for so long I wasn’t willing to mess around with diets again- you can do it either way but maybe it depends on your history with weight?

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
