CPAP machine for my apnea filling stomach with air?

Recommended Posts

I think I'm swallowing air in the night. Sometimes having to sit up and burp because of the air in my new pouch. I'm worried this is stretching my pouch. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Hello and welcome to the forums.

I had a CPAP, which was cranked up pretty high, for a while and I don't believe it would create enough pressure to harm your pouch. But, I'm not a doctor, what do I know?

Out of an abundance of caution I would check with your surgeon and your CPAP Doc, perhaps post-op you may need an adjustment.

Good Luck,

Tek

I'd be surprised if something like that would stretch a pouch, but I agree with the above person - I'd check with a doctor to see if you need an adjustment.

It may be the type of ‘mask’ you have or you may need to adjust the fit or the air flow because of your weight loss.

There could be other non CPAP causes too. There are some of us who began to breathe through our mouths post surgery (don’t ask me why but the dry mouth is pretty hideous). If you fall into this group too, it may be contributing.

Make sure you’re not eating to quickly or gulping your fluids & building up air in your stomach. Watch carbonated drinks. Have you noticed any reflux symptoms? It can cause burping (& hiccups).

The jury is still out. The medical community seems divided about this right now. Some don’t allow cpap Initially post op in the hospital for that reason. I use cpap and have a pouch and others have as well. If you are having stomach problems make sure to consult your surgeon since its his handiwork

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
