I'm hours hours away and anxiety setting in!!

Recommended Posts

I literally burst into tears as they were ready to take me into the operating room and almost did't go through with the surgery. And I won't lie--the first few weeks were really tough and I did have some moments of regret. 18 months later, I look back on this as the best decision I've ever made!

I had my sleeve done 3 months ago and I remember feeling exactly the same way. I was anxious, excited and nervous. I was waiting on the trolley and wanted so badly to back out yet so badly wanted the operation. I am so glad I did it though. The first few weeks are tough but I have continually got better every day since.

Nerves are normal!! But I think you will find that most of the posters agree that this was the best decision of their life!

I will tell you that I thought I would not be able to eat normally or enjoy food again...but even two months out, I have gone out to dinner and been able to enjoy food while still losing weight.

The first weeks are tough, but after you get over the hump, the changes are amazing!

Good luck!

Same with me. I was crying in pre-op, wondering if I was making the right decision, and thinking about getting off the bed and leaving, My surgeon came in and told me that none of his patients had regretted their decision. I also thought of my PCP's words, "If you COULD have done it on your own, you WOULD have by now." It was one of the single best decisions of my life! I cannot begin to tell how much my life has changed for the better and all the opportunities in living that are now open to me. I did have a couple of complications - blood clots and an ulcer, but those are resolved now and I would do it all over again, knowing what I know now from this side. :)

As far as the post op period goes, I think of the whole experience like child birth. It is a real pain, but you get a whole new life of the other side. A year down the road, you barely remember the recovery, the diet stages, the major adjustments, because you are so busy LIVING!!!

Welcome to the forums.

I'm thinking now is not the time for surgical horror stories.

I have moderate OCD, so when I have something like an upcoming surgery on my mind, it's on my mind all night long. This is my way of saying I understand what you're going through.

With something as big as surgery it's hard to keep your mind from going to the dark place. If I had a magic bullet way of stopping this, well, I'd have used it myself.

My 'go to' solution that at least helps is distraction. Immerse myself in something positive. So, in that spirit:

  1. Create a list of 50 things you want to happen or that you want to do post-op. My #1 was wake up after surgery, then there were things like running, kayaking, hiking. Also 'odometer' goals, like a weight beginning with 5,4,3,2, clothing sizes, lost weight. You get the point.
  2. If you like games, play games. I did a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). Very immersive.
  3. You get it, something, anything that can get your mind away from the dark place.

You are at the beginning of a thrill ride. Remember to enjoy it, even the scary parts.

Good luck

Tek

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
