Post Op - 5 Weeks - Suddenly full ALL the TIME

Recommended Posts

Howdy - Knock on wood, so far no major problems at all. I've just noticed this week that when I drink Water, I am SO FULL. Like I ate a full Thanksgiving dinner kind of full. It doesn't seem to matter how long I take to drink a bottle of water. I've been very lucky to be able to drink normal size sips since a week or so post surgery, but now even taking tiny sips, I'm just miserably full. No acid reflux, no pain in chest or throat, just feeling severly bloated.

It's really starting to affect the amount of food that I'm getting in and I find myself forcing myself to eat anything (cycle through that miserably stuffed feeling again...).

Any ideas? Seems to have just started in the last couple of weeks.

Example of my daily intake:

1 6oz cup of Cappuccino (around 5am)

1 16oz bottle of water (around 7am - Vitamins and such also) - here's where I get full.

Around 0900, attempt to choke down a Protein Drink (now miserably full)

11:00 - another bottle of water - But now so full it takes me a full 3-4 hours to get it in.

5-6 pm, some kind of Protein - Salmon, chicken, Beef, Soup - Less than 4oz

10pm or so - Realize I haven't had enough protein and find a Protein Bar to choke down before bed.

Calories vary based on protein bar and protein of the day, but usually around 500-700.

Any advice?

Time may help resolve some of this. It may be added inflammation from surgery that hasn't gone away yet.

The protein goal is something that can be worked up to, the hydration is usually more important to Doctors at this stage (but totally check with your Team)

You're doing great!

Did you by chance get a little food stuck before this began?

At any rate, my guess would be you got food stuck, or a large enough chunk irritated stuff on the way down, causing a bit of swelling, that once started just kept getting re-irritated and keeping the swelling going. This would account for most of the sensations you are having.

From the other end, good and consistent bowel movements? Any sort of back-up could also create such feelings. Or, even the slightest strain could have strained the stomach muscles, again causing inflamation.

in the first couple months, things you don't even notice when they happen can create some swelling, creating issues. It will generally work itself out eventually, just don't force things.

By my reading of your drinking, when you complete your 9am Protein drink you are at 30(ish) ounces. You may be over-achieving on drinking. Maybe allow your first 16oz of Water last for a couple hours more, move your 11am drink to start at 1pm. Just an off the wall idea.

I'm also unsure of your protein bar. Those things are like eating bricks. If you simply must have more protein, do some drink.

What does your plan say? Are you supposed to be eating protein bricks? I notice the rest of your diet is still liquid,

I don't know your plan, so you need to evaluate if your are following it, which I say so often, follow your Doc's plan to the letter.

Hope things get better,

Tek

Thanks everyone. I supposed I should have said that I'm on full food now - No restrictions (other than don't eat garbage!!)

Yeah, the Protein Bars can be BRUTAL - Quest is the WORST brick ever (I'm not crazy about the super dense texture). These are the BOMB and easy to eat (they are also small):

Fortunately, "the plumbing" is all good so not an issue there. I'll just keep on keeping on. It's not horrible, just irritating and causing me not to eat as much real food as I should.

I could not tolerate the bars at all.... it felt like a brick in my chest. I got the Liquid Protein. So much easier to get in. Mixed it with most everything..... zero flavor. Plus i hate the gritty texture in my mouth and the smell from the Protein Shakes made me nauseous.

See if your dr has samples of this one: https://shop.medtrition.com/ProSource_NoCarb_Neutral_25_Pouches?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI26SgneiB7AIVkh6tBh2UCwi2EAQYASABEgJ1SfD_BwE

Are you logging your food? myfitnesspal is a great one. For me writing down gave me opportunity to not be "completly" honest. I also monitored my weight on Baritastic. I would also say that the 10pm eating is not a good idea. I normally try to stop at 7pm.... and call it a day.

I think you are doing a great job....

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
