Hi

I've experienced bad dumping too. Never in a month of sundays did i imagine it to be as bad as it is! Trouble is, you'd think I'd have learned my lesson but one day eating say brown bread I'm ok, the next I'm in agony. There's no stead fast rules or patterns on my journey. To cap it all I've had no input from my dc or specialist nurse to help me along because of COVID.

I had my operation in March 20 and only now do i get a telephone appointment for october.....how can you be assessed or even checked over through a call. Aww well, I'm soldiering along and I've quite a few questions i would like answering.

Wow! From what I'm reading from other posts dumping is a nightmare. I'm struggling with food getting caught in my throat. Do you regret getting the surgery? Right now I do. How much weight have you lost?

I know the quantities I *generally* can eat of most foods, but even then many are moving close to the cusp of dumping even when I don't. An ill considered extra bite and I'm over the top. Or, if I'm just slightly tired, or slightly other things, the needle moves a little and what I generally can eat is too much. Which is why I generally don't eat the things that have taken me over the edge. It's simply not worth dumping every 3rd or 7th time I eat it. I imagine everyone learns this eventually.

My follow-up appoints after the 2nd month followed the same routine:

1) Check in;

2) Weigh in;

3) Talk to Doc about the last month, my plan, my eating.

4) Make next appointment, pay, walk out.

No examination. You will need to use your words. Make sure your Doc understands your issues, and that you need a path to correction.

Any questions you ask here you should ask your Doc. If there is a difference in answers, your Doc wins. Do that.

But, we are will to share experiences so you know you aren't alone, weird, or crazy. Well, related to WLS. The other stuff, we live with ;)

Lactose intolerance? A lot of people develop it for a period of time after surgery, for some it doesn't go away

Hi HS. Today I got my labs results. I’m low on Vitamin K and my bacterial test came back negative. They’re think it is lactose intolerance indeed. Of course I got the email after my egg Breakfast and cottage cheese lunch 🙃. So for now, I have to abstain from the dairy and my Premier Protein shakes.

Does anyone have experience with this or know someone who does? I have to rethink my entire purée diet. That leaves me with low fat vegetarian chili, deli turkey and roast beef. That is all I have without dairy. Oof.

Thanks in advance for the ideas guys.

Having such a bad night, again.

After getting the call about lactose and dairy I had already eaten a scrambled egg, and cottage cheese. I switched to low fat chili today though so less fat overall.

I have dumped 3 times today and my cramps are still present. I’ve had 3 or 4 Imodiums and I can’t seem to keep my fluids from evacuating from my backside. To make things worse my family keeps asking if I regret surgery and my sister who was considering checking into a referral for herself also said she is rethinking it because of my rough recovery. I’ve cried more than I can count and when I talk to my team they are hyper focus on my Protein numbers and Water goal. I am weak, tired and in pain. It would be nice to have those acknowledged. If this isn’t lactose intolerance than I have NO idea what’s going on, I just know it is bad.

Worse, you didn't dump. Didn't even feel anything negative. THIS is the scarier scenario, and it scares the crap out of most post-ops. What did you learn? That you can eat Cookies with impunity. That is a dangerous lesson. How will it impact future choices?

This. The fear of dumping is an incredible motivator to avoid eating high sugar foods.

At this point, you should probably get in with your PCP ASAP. It definitely sounds like you should have your stool checked for infection. If the surgeon’s office is not helping with your concerns, go elsewhere. With all of the diarrhea you have had, you might be significantly dehydrated at this point or even have dangerous electrolyte imbalances. In fact, as I write this, I am thinking you should probably just go to ER where they can give you IV fluids and check you electrolytes levels, as well as do some imaging if needed. Please get some help urgently! 🤗

Good that the issue has been identified. I had a temporary bout of lactcose intolerance, it didn't last long. I used something like a lactaid tablet if I wanted small amounts of dairy.

        Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
