Hi all! I have all my paperwork for what to drink/eat for my clear liquid & full liquid phases. What I don’t have is an idea on how much to drink/eat during full liquids. I know I can have thinned Greek yogurt, thinned applesauce, thinned & strained Soups, etc. But, hypothetically, could I sip on Soup or eat yogurt all day long as long as I got my Protein in? (I wouldn’t actually do that)

In the purée phase & beyond I’m told how many ounces of each category to have in a meal. I just need an idea on how much to consume during my full liquid phase. Any advice is much appreciated!

I wasn’t eating much as I progressed through the stages - just wasn’t hungry. I would sip on 200mls of Soup & a diluted Protein Shake for for hours. (That was all I’d consume each day.) When I reached the purée & soft food stages I was eating about 1/4 to 1/3 cup over a good 30+ mins 3 times a day. Sometimes I couldn’t finish the serve. (I still take ages to eat certain meals - lunch often takes an hour.) Remember the extra liquids you add to liquidise you’re food contribute to your Fluid intake which was one of the reasons I diluted my shakes.

But you’ll find you can only eat as much as you feel like eating. I never met my Protein goals during the first 6 weeks but my surgeon & dietician weren’t too concerned as it’s like you’re learning to eat again at the beginning. You can’t force yourself to eat.

Good luck.

I'm in phase 3 right now. The best advice I can give you about phases 1 & 2 are to maintain mindful eating. Listen to your body. In the hospital they want you to drink 1 fl oz every 15 mins. Then then you come home...it'll probably be the same for a bit. If you feel like you can move up to two, do it...but you WILL ABSOLUTELY know when you can't have any more. You will feel full at the top of your stomach. Go too far you'll really feel pressure at your chest...never went past that and only got to the chest pressure 1 time

My advice would be to follow what your nutritionist and Dr. recommend but also listen to your body. You will be having a challenge just meeting liquid and Protein goals. In the first week I'd say liquid>protein since you dehydrate quick. I was pretty much sipping on something all day those first few weeks since my stomach was full relatively fast. I drank a lot of clear Protein Drinks, broth and sugar free pops my first week which was clear and the second week I ate Protein Shakes, thin Soups and more pops. My program wanted 62 ounces liquid and 60 grams protein.

Don't worry about having a giant variety of stuff since you will probably not like or not want much of it. I bought several kinds of soups and only really liked 2 of them. The rest are still in the cabinet.

i would say be careful not to stock up too much on any one thing. i bought a lot of broth (better than bullion) and that was the first thing i hurled in the hospital lol will try the broths again when further out. the shake texture also seems worse after just my experience

Hi welcome to the club its the shake strugglebus. My tip would be to try some mixers for choc shake add in something called PB2 as an example. I also just learned about fairlife milk which is high Protein and at target but havent picked it up yet to try. You can get unflavored Protein Powder to go in Jello and broth. Are you on puree if so chicken salad egg salad in the magic bullet blender. eggs over easy also help me but got that approve by surgeon first

Thanks for Your advice, today starts day 15 I’ma little afraid to move on to puréed foods, I’ve struggled with just simple yogurt but my surgeon said I can advance. This is definitely a struggle! But hey for the first time in 5 years I’m under 300, so my struggle hasn’t been in vain!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
