Food tolerance rollercoaster?

Recommended Posts

I’m just about a month out and have been given the green light to start testing out solid foods within reason. I was feeling really good during the liquid portion, keeping down every Protein Shake, not throwing up at all... basically could not wait to have solid foods again. But now, I feel sick all the time. I’m never in the mood for any food or drink, nothing ever sounds good. Things that worked well at the beginning (yogurt, canned chicken) make me feel gross now. When I eat, I almost always feel discomfort. I’m pretty sure I’m dehydrated and wouldn’t be surprised if I had low Iron or something else.

How about anyone else? Did you have swings like this, and how long did they last?

You’re not alone. I found it was because my taste buds changed & some foods (even things I used to enjoy) tasted terrible. Also, I just didn’t feel hungry. I kept my diet pretty simple & repetitive the first couple of months. I gave myself time to heal & break habits & cravings & slowly added new foods to test what my tummy could or couldn’t tolerate.

You’ll also find that something you ate successfully for days will make you unexpectedly sick the next. If I didn’t have it for a week or so I could eat it again. It’s a big learning stage.

Get your fluids up, have a chat with your medical team (they may want to do some tests), don’t be afraid to go back to having a Protein Shake to help meet Fluid & Protein goals & get some nutrients in.

Good luck.

if it keeps up, let your clinic know. You're in the right time frame for a stricture. If you start not being able to keep things down, give them a call. It happens to about 5% of RNY'ers, and it's an easy fix.

I feel pretty blaze about food right now too. Its hard to find something the pouch doesnt react to in some way. Its a russian roulette of diareah or nausea at times. I am a little over two weeks out so im probably still healing and some food intolerances may be temporary

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
