Gain 3 weeks out

Recommended Posts

I’m a little over 3 weeks out and had been hovering around the same weight for a week. The last two days the scale has actually gone up a couple pounds! Is this normal during the “stall”?

yes. Do a search on this site for the three week stall. There are over 17,000 posts on it (and no, I am NOT kidding...). Happens to almost all of us... Just stick to your program, stay off the scale if you have to, and trust the process. Your weight loss WILL start up again...

My concern is not with the stall. I expected it to stall. I did not however expect to see the scale to go in the wrong direction:(

intestinal backup (i.e. constipation)? Water retention? Hormone fluctuations? These can all cause a slight gain.

it would take 7000 calories over and above what your body needs to function to gain two pounds, so this isn't "true" weight - it's likely water - or "bathroom backup"

It's normal for your weight to fluctuate by a couple of pounds (up or down) when your weight is "stable," which it kind of is during a stall. I weigh myself probably more often than I should, but I have seen my weight fluctuate by a couple of pounds within the same day, depending on when I weigh myself relative to eating, drinking, going to the bathroom, and exercising (sweating). And of course, the clothing and shoes you're wearing will directly affect the scale as well. So if any of these things are different from one day to the next (e.g., you weigh yourself in pajamas before Breakfast one day and after lunch in jeans the next), that could look like a gain. For that reason, a lot of people recommend only weighing yourself once per week so you don't go crazy over those normal fluctuations.

Are you following your surgeon's diet plan? If you are, it's basically impossible not to lose weight at this point, so don't get stressed over a couple of days in the wrong direction. I know it's frustrating; I'm not losing weight as quickly as I hoped, and it's tough to see posts here from people who started lower than I did and have lost twice as much weight in the same amount of time. You just have to keep reminding yourself that it's a marathon, not a sprint, and if you stick with the program, you WILL get results.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
