Crappy Dietician

Recommended Posts

Askmehow, I get about 800 to 1000 a day if I'm lucky. But I do make sure I get my Protein in, sometimes it's food sometimes it shakes. It has been a conscious decision every day. Some days I feel like eating like a hog and some days I don't like eating at all. I kind of thought my nutritionist would have addressed this issue but she has not. All they care is that I lost the weight and that I keep it off. sigh.

Thanks again for everyone's input. Legit, found Duv Vuong as suggested by Kaki68...life changer. All the questions I had, and more in great logical and informative detail.

This has seriously been a game changer for the better for me. He's brutal at times but he's the first surgeon I've seen explain, in great depth, not only what to do but why, how, when, etc.

I love Dr Vuong! He really does tell it to you straight, doesn’t he?! He’s written 13 books on bariatric surgery; check them out! I got mine through Amazon. His “colorful” language cracks me up! 😂 Have you watched the video about “staying on the elevator?” Very motivational!!!

Thanks for telling me some days you are more hungry than others. I'm starting to notice that today, now I'm ok with it since you said that. Well, we have everyone on here, so yay! Boy what a blessing everyone is. Can you imagine how anxious we would be. What a pain for doctors it must have been. Lol

I did. It totally made sense. I've had a lot of people tell me to be happy with whatever weight loss I get and don't expect to make my goal. If I had to have major surgery, I will make it worth my whole. When he made the WWII reference, I knew what he was getting at, but I had a "Oh god, this wont end well" moment. He's a hoot.

Keep going, Keatsy! You CAN do it! Don’t get off that elevator! Don’t settle for less than what you want! I’m so glad Dr Vuong has been motivating for you. I appreciate his straight-forward approach. And yes, he IS a hoot! 😂😁

Good morning. I have been a little MIA. I am back now after much distress. I absolutely am disillusioned with both my dietitian and PA. They are both inconsistent and not available to work with. Since COVID it is even worse. I live an hour away from the hospital. I am working on ways to develop my own support systems, but it is totally hard.

I have been a licensed counselor before and know how important these meetings are, as well as having a support group to be apart of.

There's a couple of suggestions on this thread that may help-check out hiring your own nutritionist or taking in some guidance from other bariatric surgeons. I know it's frustrating, as we've all seen, but I've found sometimes people make their own place from logical resources and do just fine.

I've been less than impressed with, specifically, my dietician. I feel this is arguably the most crucial person of your time and I find mine...lackluster.

My appts are short, clipped, and she seems constantly in a hurry or irritated when I ask questions. She doesn't return phone calls (like when I wasn't able to make my 3 week appt and made several calls attempting to change it to a phone/telecom.) No one ever response, despite voicemails left. This was right at the moment where I was transitioning stages!

I finally sent an email saying I wanted a call back because I needed nutritional guidance. She sent a short message and I got a short phone call, where she gave me some basic info. I was less than impressed with the answers to my specific questions, where she seemed unsure or simply didn't care-a lot of "ums" or "uh ok". Then she sort of chastised me for drinking two Protein Drinks (normal size) a day to get Protein. I asked her how else I was supposed to get Protein at this point and she stated "you just won't".

Um?

I'm growing weary of her irritated attitude, lack of info and lack of communication. Thankfully, I've been getting most of my info off the forum and various other post WLS plans I'm finding online (many of which I like better, and many on here are on.) One of my biggest pet peeve is when I have a specific question, and shoot her an email or call, she'll respond with "it's in the booklet" instead of answering the question. (I'm not drilling her, and I often can't find it in the 'booklet'.)

Anyone else has less than stellar dietitians?

I feel your pain and frustration. I also agree that the nutritionist is the most important especially after surgery. I had my surgery in February 2015 and my nutritionist sucked sour grapes bad. I mean, it's like she went out of her way to give the most general uninformed basic information she could. My surgeon was great but his staff leaves a lot to be desired. I didnt get my first post-op appointment until May becasue they kept rescheduling. By that time I had developed a blood clot in the lung and pneumionia. 5 years latter I've gained most of the weight back trying to do this by myself because I refuse to go back to that bariatric office.

Love him, too! Eat a wonderful salad everyday. Hubby enjoys a green smoothie each morning. Most thankful and glad to have made it to the penthouse! Dr. V is spot on when stating so many in the field often have such low expectations for their patients. As my Naval Academy father use to say, "If you're going to do something half-assed, don't do it at all!" Dad was and Dr. Vuong is a colorful communicator, but I've never doubted his sincerity, intelligence + care for the bari community. Ditto... very supportive, informative and encouraging! ;]

I like several of his videos as well (though from what I've heard and seen he's become kind of shady with his weight loss stuff, which is a shame because people dismiss his earlier videos because of this and I think there are at least a few gems to be found).

However, I wonder if his patients or the patients following his approach are more successful and reach lower weights in the long run or not.

Same with Dr. Weiner (some excellent videos out there as well). I wonder if his patients are more successful in the long run.

Congrats on reaching “the penthouse!” My Dad always says “ Hitch your wagon to a star!” And that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m just in the pre-op phase and feeling a bit frustrated with my weight loss. I eat about 750 calories a day (or less) and it’s mostly Protein. No sugar, no dairy, lots of Water. In the past if I wanted to drop some weight I would follow the same plan but now the weight just won’t come off. Went through menopause recently so I’m wondering if that has something to do with it. I’m seeing a hormone specialist and have an implant. Another reason?? I’m feeling a bit bummed since I’m trying sooo hard! I weigh and measure everything and I plan my meals and follow it; no cheating. Since you’re already in the penthouse, Any advice you can give would be appreciated!

Hey there, I am so sorry you had this experience. As well as all of those who have replied to your comment.

I am a dietitian, who actually had the bariatric sleeve procedure. I have both clinical and experiential knowledge.

I am happy to help. :)

I'm curious what you mean by this-and I say that from someone who recently, despite enjoying his videos, got kind of annoyed by the amount of marketing emails I'm getting from his company.

You already answered your own question: you're getting marketing e-mails. Maybe do a quick search on him on this board. There was some talk about a pyramid scheme scam or something like that.

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
