I’m from BC but got it done in Toronto in February. (Self pay. I thought I had been on the wait list here for nearly 2 years. The surgeons offices ask you not to call, and that they will call you when your closer down the wait list. Turns out my dr. missed sending something, they sent a fax to let him know something they needed was missing, my dr. office apparently never got this fax. And I didn’t find out until I had my doctor look into it late last fall because I was worried about how long the wait was. So rather than start the possible 3-5 year wait all over again, I opted to use my line of credit to pay for the surgery. Very expensive, but better than slowly dying...)

I'm pre op currently.

Congrats everyone! Did everyone get it done in toronto?
What was the wait time like?
Any glitches or surprises with ohip, etc?

Sent from my SM-G970W using BariatricPal mobile app

I had mine done at Humber River, paid for by OHIP. No issues nor glitches in the process, and had I not changed my mind a couple times, from PCP Referral in May 2017 to scheduled 1st surgery date (Jan 2018), it would have been 8 months.

Turns out I delayed my surgery twice (due to indecision) but finally bit the bullet and had it done in Oct 2018. Looking back, I wish I just went through with it the first time. But yeah, hindsight is 20/20.

If you are able to choose which centre in T.O. to go to, Humber is better for parking availability and cost....and you won’t have to deal with downtown traffic to attend the multiple appointments (AND it has a higher percentage if private rooms 😎)

Good Luck!

Hi there - I live in the GTA and I am getting the lap band taken out and thinking about the mini gastric bypass. I see above ppl saying OHIP covers? I paid for the lap band back in 2009 out of pocket. What is the process for OHIP?

Many thanks!

For Ontario, the requirements are one of either:

  • BMI of 40+, or...
  • BMI of 35+ with 2 documented co-morbidities (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, etc)

If you qualify, your PCP has to refer you to the Ontario Bariatric Network, and if they approve you, its all pretty straightforward from there. In Ontario, it takes about 8-12 months from date of refferal to surgery (if attend all your appointments)

Check out the OBN's website for more info: https://www.ontariobariatricnetwork.ca/

(or ask your PCP)

Good Luck!

Hi! I'm from Alberta and looking to self pay for surgery in toronto as the wait here is 7-10 years.

Who would you recommend using?

Hi! Wow, 7-10 years is a long time!

I had my sleeve done with Dr. David Starr in Toronto...but through provincial insurance, so I didn't really pick him, he was assigned to me, and had no complaints. He's lovely.

I don't know what his wait times would be for self-pay, though...I'm assuming it would be quicker, so long as his case load is not too heavy.

Going in on Tuesday. Things are arranged (need to order a cab to the station because it's too early for a bus going there) and I'm getting more nervous by the hour.

I feel like I've finally gotten past the biggest hurdle. Surgery date is September 6th, the day after Labor Day, and yesterday I got my insurance approval letter. I've followed everything they've told me to do, and I've even lost 30 lbs on my own since hubby had to change his diet for diabetes. No worries now about having to do 4 weeks of the liver shrinking diet instead of 2. On my initial visit, if I had gained just 5lbs I would have had to do 4 weeks. It's getting closer. Just 2 more months to wait.

Although the prep work took energy, I found the biggest hurdle was post-operative. The first 48 hrs were extremely uncomfortable. I did an overnight and trying to down the liquids, Tylenol, and especially the barium was rough. Thankfully though, I got away with only having to have 1 belly injection after surgery. Needless are not my thing.

I am looking for people to connect with that are 4-5 years out. Many of the support sights I go to are all newbies. And while I enjoyed that when i first had my surgery and found it useful, I am looking to exchange ideas with folks that are out a few years. I am slowly gaining weight back and losing my excitement. I don't want that!
