help i think im overeating

Recommended Posts

im in the puree phase post op of gastric sleeve and the last two days ive been very concerned about what i eat and how i eat it. i eat every 1-2 hours or else i get SO HUNGRY. as well as i take big bites not small and i finish my meal in less than 30 minutes???

heres an example of what i had today

breakfast: frozen mango blended with lactose free milk which turned into icecream!

(after two hours) snack: apple juice

(after 3 hours) lunch: tuna blended with 3 spoons of greek yogurt and a Tomato

(after an hour) snack: Jello but a big amount

(after 30 mins) dinner: left over tuna with a big plate of Beans.

i wasnt even full after all that and i dont know what’s happening to me and caused me a mental breakdown, im afraid i ruined every pound ive lost the past 2 weeks and im panicking. thats just the beginning and im nearly starting a binging phase which terrifies me knowing it’ll get worse!!!!!!! i thought id be done with my eating disorder after i do the surgery but its still the same old depressing life....

That was totally me. Still a year post op and 70 pounds down I can “graze” all day I have to be careful. Sometimes I always feel hungry. Definitely talk to you nutritionist. I think it can be normal for some people. Sometimes it can be acid, which TUMS can help with that. Just make sure your getting in your Protein and fluids. Maybe instead of apple juice drink a low calorie drink or Water just to avoid extra calories. Hopefully you start solids soon. Some foods can be “sliders” and go down easily. I have to eat solid food to feel full longer. Hang in there.

Try drinking some Water (as much as you can handle) every time you feel hungry instead of reaching for a snack, and then go for a short walk or find something to keep yourself busy. It will help keep your mind off of it. I feel the same way sometimes, and it typically isn’t real hunger but head hunger.

It’s just one day. You can start over tomorrow. It won’t undo your progress. Keep in mind that you might start hitting stalls soon. It happens to virtually everyone and it will break. Definitely give your nutritionist a call and ask for some advice re: overeating concerns. They may have some suggestions more tailored to your needs.

I am no expert but I would advise that you blend your mango with a Protein Shake or add Protein Powder like GENEPRO or Isopure flavorless or vanilla. I would sub a shake for the apple juice. That will add more Protein to your morning, which should help keep you feeling fuller.

Good luck!!

my advice.... start with a saucer plate and us your measuring tool. I stuck with 1/8 cup. 1/8 cup Protein, 1/8 cup veggie and 1/8 cup other..... Now that you are on the puree phase, i would stick to 1 cup. Puree will go down so much easier and you will be hungry faster. Practice putting down the fork/spoon down after each bite and actually letting it go. Put food in mouth, but don't just swallow... let it set in there and still chew. It help to close my eyes and try and pick out the different flavors. Practice your chewing. Wait 20 seconds between bites. NEVERRRRRRR drink while you eat. This also will cause you to get hungry faster. wait the 30 min after your last bite.

Never eat in front of the tv, at a desk, in the car... I only eat at the table. This way you can concentrate on your eating and not whats on the tv. Hope it helps

Was the Jello sugar free ? I dont see anything wrong with what you ate. Drop the apple juice unless it is sugar free or a 5 calorie juice. I was eating around 700 calories post op VSG within a month. If you feel you are having true hunger it could be acid. I had an acid problem with VSG and it mimicked hunger pains. Hang in there you are doing fine.

Definitely agree that it is probably "head hunger". I had that BAD during my first 2-3 weeks. Now it is gone completely (at coming up on 3 month).

I'd be careful with Apple Juice... even if it is "no sugar added" -- it will have sugar in it from the apples.

I just looked up the nutritional facts for Great Value No Sugar Added Apple Juice.. and it has 28g's of carbs for one serving.. and that is net carbs as there is no Fiber in it. I don't eat 28g's of net carbs in a day -- much less in one serving... 28g's of sugar too.

Remember: low carb and low sugar are VERY important to your weight loss journey.

EDIT: I was told no fruit juices in my liquid diet, even if they have "no sugar added".. That label is very deceptive.

don't chase the full feeling. You likely won't feel it at all this early out because a) you had some nerves cut during surgery, and it takes awhile from them to regenerate and b) most people don't start feeling any restriction until they start on solid foods. Even after everything is back to "normal" ( whatever "normal" is after WLS), for most of us, "full" is different than it was pre-surgery, and it takes awhile to recognize what your new "full" cues are.

in the mean time, measure out what your clinic says you should be eating and only eat that. Don't wait for the "full" feeling, because it's not going to come for awhile, and when it eventually does, it's going to be different than it was pre-surgery.

P.S. unfortunately, the surgery fixes our stomachs, not our brains. If you're having trouble with binge eating, therapy may help with that (a LOT of WLS patients go through therapy - at least for awhile - to help with food addictions)

I had ESG on June 19th (7 weeks post op). I still suffer from evening hunger. Evenings were the time I would binge snack before I had the procedure. I find that a Protein Shake (even a half of one) does the trick. So I would suggest you delete the high sugar juices and drink flavors Water or Protein Shakes instead. Also make sure you are getting the required amount of daily Protein. Also try your best to get in as much of the daily water requirement.

The Fairlife milk can replace Water and juice and give you 13g of Protein. My dr recommended I use Fairlife bc water doesn’t go down well for me. I get the Fairlife skim milk and it’s been a life saver since day 1. I’ll be 6 months post op Aug. 17. I’ve lost 90 lbs. I weigh my food and plan my meals and focus on protein. I don’t deny myself a scoop of ice cream when I want it which has been twice a month. I make sure it’s 2oz. and only if I’ve reached my protein goal for the day. I look at everyone’s systems to find tips. I wanted to share mine in case it may help. I don’t want to leave out that I exercise 3 days a week for 60 mins each but nothing extreme. Leslie sansone’s Walk Away the Pounds and an ab workout. You are already doing everything right! You are monitoring yourself and making changes where you see fit! That’s LIFELONG changes. How awesome is that!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
