Day 7 - Today I had an episode of weakness and lowered pulse (54). I discussed it with my doctor and he said I need more Water. I increased my water and then just a few minutes ago, I regurgitated water and Soup. It wasn’t a whole lot and it happened as a result of trying to burp. Still have lots of gas activity. I’m feeling better then earlier in the day but I have to find the right rate of drinking water so I don’t regurgitate again. I was allowed to remove the outer dressings today and I took a nice shower with a mild soap. I use Aveno gentle body wash. I’m going to be early at night and waking up early with no naps during the day. That is a major change for me because I was sleeping up to three hours during the day at my highest weight. I’m down a total of 10.5 pounds since August 31st when I started the prep diet. I can tell that this is going to work for me. 😀

Thank you for sharing your journey. My gastric bypass surgery is scheduled for August 18. My goal is 125 pounds also.
You are really helping me to know what to expect. I’m scared and excited at the same time

Right around the corner. I think the best advice to give is to anticipate that you might have a roller coaster of emotions. That was the thing that shocked me the most. If you can try to bring headphones and download a streaming app so you can listen to calming music. I used Pandora and listened to the spa channel after my panic attack and then again at home when I felt frustrated. Walk the unit as much as you can tolerate to get rid of gas once permitted. It’s very painful when you are freshly operated on. Ask me anything if you have questions.

Day 8 - on to stage two, full liquids. Today I am nauseated. New things I tried today Plain fat free yogurt with Protein Powder. Not very good tasting and not fun to eat. I tried a V 8 which tasted good and went down easy. Too easy I think because I had some feeling of bloat for a while afterward. Without using the medicine cups I seem to be drinking too fast. Gas is still a problem too. I lost five more pounds for a total of 15.5 since the prep diet on 7/24/20.

This evening I went for a walk but I couldn’t go for that long just 15 minutes or so. I feel weak and I already have neuropathy in my feet so I have balance issues. I have exercises that I can do to promote better balance but I need permission from the surgeon to put them into action. I was also able to take all my 3x tops out of my closet because they are super loose on me. I’m donating them to a church that serves the poor in my city. I’m going to have to do something about my sluggish digestive tract. I have only gone once and that’s not typical for me at all. I have colace but they are gel caps and they are bigger then the mouth of a straw. Not sure what to do. I’ll bring it up with the doctor on Tuesday.

I enjoy hearing what you are going through. I feel I might have been mislead by others about what to expect after surgery. I just hope I got this. Thank you for sharing, I personally appreciate it greatly. Hope you are doing well.

It went away on its own. I know what I did wrong. I added three new items to my diet in one day and my stomach pouch probably wasn’t ready for that.

Day 8 - fatigue today. I took two naps during the day. I introduced a new food today. Goya black bean Soup blended until no Beans visible. I also had a low sodium v8 which I drank using medicine cups. Both were delicious and well tolerated. I took a short stroll today in the park. It’s getting easier to tolerate the walks. I had more gas then ever today. I’ve never been this gassy in my life! I was able to go to the bathroom today without any laxatives which was a relief. I continue to use the Premier Protein shakes to meet the daily Protein requirements for my program (60 grams). Tomorrow I plan on having a well blended sweet potato pumpkin soup as my meal. Im kind of scared to eat yogurt right now because I feel like that was the troublemaker the other day. I will reintroduce the yogurt again in a few days.

The important thing to understand is that it’s not a straight line. Even within a single day right now the body fluctuates in terms of recovery. I’m trying to document it best as possible for those coming after me down the road to recovery.

Regarding day 8, I ended up with pretty severe Gas pains in the middle of the night. I’m thinking the Goya black bean Soup was the culprit. I was so uncomfortable that I went out in the middle of the night to purchase chewable Probiotics. The remedy for a food that is not tolerated is to hold it for a week or two and retry it again in a smaller volume. I’m definitely going to try that because Beans are too valuable a food to cross off the list.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
