60 years young and having surgery

I'm 65 and just had it done. I was supposed to have it done 10 years ago but two weeks before surgery, while getting all my doctors appointments taken care of, they found breast cancer so had to deal with that. Then I moved and needed a pacemaker, But I feel great. I didn't have one side effect or problem from the surgery or after. I've asked myself if they actually did anything, then I see the incisions. I've waited so long for this that I'm going to do everything I can to be successful and be the active person I am supposed to be.

I'm 57 and I just had a VSG done last week. It was painful for the first couple of days and now I am almost back to 100%. I thought "Am I too old for this? And then I looked at my 87 year old aunt, who swims in the senior Olympics" and realized that I probably have MANY years left in my life and I want to be as healthy as possible!

I am 67 and had it done July 9, 2020. I feel really fortunate - no pain or nausea. I didn’t take anything stronger than OTC Tylenol. Doing great!

60 now but had it at 55. I know several WLS patients who had it in their 60s, so you're definitely not alone!

I had my VSG surgery @62 in November 2018. No problems, no pain, recovered fast. Now @64 nobody believes me I'm THAT old because I'm full of energy, eat healthy and go to gym regularly.

I had mine done on 5/27/2020 at the age of 63. No pain, just occasional nausea and gas. I’ve lost a total of 45 pounds and want to lose 45 more. So happy with my choice to have it done!

I had my surgery last year when I was 59. Great results, no post-op pain whatsoever, fast recovery, etc. My one poor outcome was that the 100+ lb. weight loss aged me terribly. I look about ten years older than I did when I was fat and my skin is wrinkled like a SharPei's. That said, the WLS was still absolutely necessary and a lifesaver for me.

I had RNY 3/11/20 at age 66. Thrilled that i did this😄and hubby cannot believe how smooth it has been. I think he was afraid his life would change (as in he’d starve) but I still prepare tasty meals, I just add starches to his and eat my little Protein, veggie, maybe small serving of fresh berries. I try to keep net carbs around 40.

My only ‘complaint’ is that my rate of loss has been slowww, but my skin is already shrinking back much better than expected, so maybe slow ain’t all bad. I set a realistic goal for my weight/lifestyle at 150, no lower than 140. I want to be able to enjoy food/life/living/ without the huge sacrifice of maintaining 120lbs and looking older than my years.

We walk every morning for 35-40 minutes right after Breakfast and that sets my healthy tone for the day. I log in Myfitness Pal and wear a Fitbit for tracking and motivation. If I slip and go over my 800-1,000 calories, I pull back to compensate. If I eat less than 800 “Healthy, Nutritious Calories”, I find I don’t have the energy to be as active as I like to be. Bloodwork last week was perfect. Post-op BM’s can be a challenge, but you find a way that works for you.

I'm 73, had my sleeve 6 yrs ago. Would I do it again? I'm not sure but I doubt it and here's why.

I'm very healthy now as I was before my surgery. My PB is normal as are all my other blood levels etc. The big problem I never had before the surgery is GERD. I'm lucky I only have to take 1 Prilosec a day, but if I don't take it I have a lot of acid and pain. I have a small hiatial hernia by the esophagus which adds to the GERD. Also Prilosec can affect the kidneys but I can't go w/o it.

Also Constipation is an issue I have that I never did before surgery. I have to take 2 softeners a day plus Fiber to keep regular.

The only food issue is I love sauerkraut but it doesn't love me anymore.

In all these years I've only lost 30 lbs total starting at 200 I'm now 171. Lowest I ever got was 167.

Right now I'm doing a 18/6 intermittent fasting and low carb to see if I can take off more weight and gain more energy. . It has been a fight to the finish to get 1 lb off after my weight loss stopped.

In hindsight I would not have had the surgery.

The decision is an individual choice and I'm happy for all who are a success and healing thoughts to all who are having problems.

I was 59, 1 month from 60, when I was sleeved 6/18/20. My recovery was really easy except for the pain from a gas, I healed quickly, and have had virtually no nausea in these 8 weeks. I would compare it to a robotic hysterectomy (I would compare it to a robotic hysterectomy (which I also found pretty easy). Wish you the best!
