In process of completing pre-ops

Recommended Posts

Hi. This is my first post. I am a 50 year old woman with life long weight struggles. I am near the top of my weight range right now at 251 pounds at 5 feet tall. I'm half way through my pre OP appointments at this point. At my initial visit, I discussed having the gastric sleeve but the more I read about the bypass, I think it may be a better choice for me. I do have some problems with heartburn and I see that the sleeve can aggravate that condition. Anyone around my height and weight have the bypass instead or planning to? I'd love to hear a few different takes on this. Thank you.

I’m 5’ 3/4” and I’m in the Pre surgery stage. I was originally thinking the sleeve as well but I have a feeling the bypass may be what the surgeon recommends. I’m waiting on all my records to get sent to them so they can schedule my consult. I’ll keep you updated on what they tell me.

I did the bypass specifically because I had GERD before I had surgery, and I didn't want to risk it getting worse. RNY often improves if not outright cures GERD, whereas VSG can make it worse (it doesn't always - and it only happens to a minority of people, but it's a significant enough minority that surgeons will often recommend that heartburn sufferers go with the bypass). I've been very happy with the bypass.

My concern is that if I do the bypass, I will lose more then I need to. That the reason I was leaning towards the sleeve. I guess it’s best to wait for my endoscopy and see how that factors into the procedure I need.

it's actually WAY more common for people not to make it to goal than it is for them to lose too much weight. Average weight loss for a bypass is 70% of your excess weight. I made it to a normal BMI, but only 10-15% of people do. So....it's not likely. Besides, even if you're one of the few who loses too much, you can always stop the loss by increasing your calories.

Catwoman is correct do not think you'll ever lose too much the bypass is great. Yes I lost more than I had planned but I'm still going great!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
