Hello vsg fam! Just some quick updates. Had my surgery Aug 10th. SW weight was 250 and today I'm at 229. Doc says I'm right in line with his expectations. I'm on stage 3 of my diet (fork soft foods) and I learn each day what my new tummy can and can't handle. I definitely have more energy and I'm feeling more mobile already. If anyone newly sleeved has questions about beginning steps, please feel free to reach out. I've learned alot along my journey and I'm happy to share what to expect and what helped me. Good luck everyone!! :)

I really hate to break it to ya but some of are in pain even with meds from doc. Just saying lol

Sadly, I'm in that boat I spoke to my doctor and he told me there is a stitch inside and once that pops the pain will go away. Hoping it pops soon. 😩 How are you doing?

Well I am probably in the complication group. I had alot of hurling post op at hospital, my oxy sats were dropping to 89 etc. Girl in the hospital as I was writhing in pain they tried to offer me aromatherapy. I said you got to be kidding me I am going to die. lol. When I first woke from op and all the people were talking to me as they were rolling me places I said Hi and they said oooh shes so soft spoken. And since then my voice has been hoarse like im il. My doctor said i had a small mouth and she had to endoscopy me during surgery so I am guessing that my voice box may be got bumped. Hoping it improves but I am a week post op and it has not so far

Anyways, they did a "Ugi" on me at the hospital where I drank radioactive stuff and the nurse said I wasn't going to get to go home that day (4th day) in hospital because I had something called an ileus that was still asleep. I told my surgeon and she said she would handle it and I was released because surgeon allowed but there has been no explanation about ileus. I did have two bowel movements day 6 which didn't hurt at all unlike some of the horror stories I read. There had been a constant gurgle coming from my throat like a frog croaking and I was constantly regurging into my mouth when trying to sleep. I sleep sitting up on couch but would still happen. Having now switched to purees that is much better! Slept in bed last night finally but way elevated. I have pretty rough severe pain below left breast and i have been taking tram morn and night. The doctor ordered a "2 view xray" on my one week followup for the pain but havent heard anything back yet. Weightloss has been working. Talking to some of the other girls in the waiting room I was a bit jealous they didnt have any pain or nothing and each hour was a struggle for me. I take awhile to go from sit to stand due to that left side pain being so bad

I threw a lot as well post op. I had a bad reaction to anesthesia which I normally do well with and never had reaction in the past. I had bad nausea as well and if they would have offered me aromatherapy...its amazing how different everyone responds to this surgery. Glad things are starting to somewhat pick up for you.

Hey everyone! I had VSG on August 27th, stayed one night in the hospital and have been able to get my fluids and Protein since day one (which totally surprised me). I’m literally sipping all day and use an app to keep track of my intake. I’m already sick of the shakes 😂 and have started substituting Bone Broth for some fluids/protein. My surgery weight was 226 (I’m 5’8) and prior to surgery I lost 14lbs in the liquid diet. Since surgery I’ve lost 7 pounds in a little over a week. I already know that I’m not going to be a fast loser, and that’s ok.
First 5 days post surgery I had zero appetite. Since then I do find myself hungry (I think??) but usually I just sip on a shake and it goes away. Does it take anyone else an hour to finish a shake? ?
My first surgical follow up is September 9th and I’m really hoping I can move onto soft foods- I need yogurt to help move my bowels!

I could finish one in an hour but id be sick. My pouch prefers one half to one ounce max right now then my nose starts runinng and i get discomfort (had rny)

chicken salad and chicken alfredo meal prep done. Going to make some ricotta bake tomorrow. Also like egg salad. Puree is easier on pouch than the shake for me. Wish i could get the whole sixty from puree

I am also having headaches. I can't believe you are back to work!!!!! Wow! I had surgery on the 2nd. I got home yesterday. I had to go to ICU then a regular room. But every time I take medication (crushed it) I pass out and I was having headaches starting in the back of my head around neck. Then the pain was so bad it effected my temples. So I just sent an email to see if I have to take some of these meds and asked what could be the headache problem. I'll let you know what my doctors say, but you are having different ones I think. I hope you feel better.

My headaches have finally gone away. Then I started having pain in my shoulder up to my left ear whenever I took a deep breathe that lasted for about 4 days. Its finally gone now too. My doctor said it was from the anesthesia. The meds they used had to pass out of my body. I was afraid it was a leak or something but now its gone and im good. A couple of my incisions were leaking and that was a pain. It freaked me out at first but they are beginning to dry up and scab over. They look irritated and just out right mad. Doctor said as long as its clear and no funky smell im good to go. Going back to work kinda saved me i was starting to feel a little depressed and regretting having the surgery. But i wake up take meds do my 4oz meal and energy is there and im ready to start my day. Staying in bed and freaking out over every little sound and ache was not beneficial to my mental health in anyway. Everyone is different this just works for me. Hope all is well and good luck on your journey.

Moved on to soft foods. I had chicken last night and I was scared at first but I took everyone’s advice and chewed very, very slowly. Who knew a meal could last thing long. So far I can tolerate chicken, tuna and ground beef. I tried salmon which I love and prefer over tuna but peachy (my pouch name) doesn’t like it at all. How is everyone doing?

I've been too scared to try chicken yet, but so far crab, salmon and cheese are ok!

How long since you had surgery? I am only 7 days and been feeling weak and dizzy on this liquid diet.

Loving ‘peachy’.

Counting the days (5) until I hit the puréed stage. When I first met with the dietician, I frowned at the the thought of purées (texture), lets just say things look a lot different now after weeks of liquids. I can’t wait!

I named my sleeve “ Ciara’, she has good vibes, but a diva-tude.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
