I can’t decide if I want to have the surgery or just lose the weight. I have lost 80-100 lbs about 4 times in last 15 years. I am tired of the yo-yo and thats why I met with doctor. I am just nervous of side effects from the surgery. Also, not being able to have a beer or drink through a straw.

This is not a cure all surgery; it’s a tool to help with weight loss. Also you can have alcohol just not at first. My doctor told me when I eventually am able to drink I will not need to drink as much. So saving money. Yea the no straw thing, that’s a hard one I get it, but hey save the turtles. My advice, if you can’t jump in 💯 then I would hold off, because clearly if you were ready it would be a no brainer. Sorry to be blunt, but I would want the same thing told to me, if I was in your shoes.

I used to think and be that way until I realized I always put the weight back on. To do this you have to be committed. First you have to jump through hoops getting coverage, tests and dieting before the surgery. That teaches you to be ready for after surgery and your how to eat changes and becomes a new habit. I will be 70 soon after surgery and wish I had done this earlier because I yo yo dieted all my life. I kept a closet with a wide range of sizes so I would have something to wear. My surgery is in 8 days.

I am scheduled for August 17th. A bit nervous but have had a couple of friends that have had the sleeve and hey tell me it will be fine.
Good luck to everyone!

Hi K_schroeder,

I am also scheduled for the 17th but for the bypass. I wish it wouldn't be a Monday, but hoping we have a speedy recovery. Best of luck!

I'm 2 days post op and I know exactly what you mean. Minimal nausea and gas pain (thankfully!). Just a lil confused about the uncomfortable pain in my tummy. Almost feels like hungry pains but I don't think that's right. I'm still in the liquid diet phase and Jello seems to help.

Two days post op. Not feeling so hot but keeping my eye on the prize! Stomach area feels a little weird. Kinda like a mix between menstrual cramps and gas pains just higher up in my abdomen. Also having some challenges with getting all my fluids in because regardless how slow I sip it still feels like air is getting in. Any recommendations?

Hi everyone. I’ve been a lurker for almost two months, actually, since I began my journey. In fact I joined the same day I attended the information seminar with my surgeon, on June 23. Well today, I was informed that my insurer has approved my surgery, and was offered a surgery date of August 31st. (Request for approval was submitted on Friday.) Yikes!

If you’re concerned I made a hasty decision, no worries, I explored weight loss surgery in 2012, and got pretty far in the process, but decided to commit to trying on my own, which I did with moderate success three times in the last eight years, losing an average of 70lbs each time. But like others, the ‘lose-gain-lose” game has been exhausting. I’m committed to putting the work in and view surgery as a fresh start.

At first I felt lucky that my insurance did not not have the 3-6 months physician supervised weight loss requirement. Now, I’m not sure I still feel that way. By the way, I did have to complete everything else; psych exam, nutritionist consult, EGD, and abdominal ultrasound.

Anyway, I just want to thank everyone for their candid comments, they’ve been extremely hopeful. As for next steps for me, I will hit the ground running tomorrow in prep for surgery and post-op.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
