No pureed stage? Lovely. It IS odd how there are so many vastly different pre and post instructions. Makes me want to pick from the lot what sounds the best to me. Certainly Peanut Butter after 2 weeks sounds good. I will take your advice and save the broth for afterwards so it feels like a treat.

Just got off the phone with pre-registration. I wish I could get my stomach under control.

I like the WonderSlim brand of shakes from Diet Direct.com. They have many flavors. My wife likes the chocolate cream flavor. I like the dark cocoa cream, which I usually prepare as a hot Protein cocoa.

The same place also sells bariatric Vitamins, by the way.

Today was a list making day. .. Things I need to accomplish to prep my family. I'm assuming I won't be helpful to them for about 2 weeks. Also a list of things for the hospital. One for Meds and comfort items for the first few weeks at home and finally a grocery list. I'll go shopping tomorrow for my 3 day liver diet (starting the 6th) and first week of "food".

My list:

Bone Broth (chicken and beef)
Several different kinds of Protein shakes
sugar free Jello (plan to mix in some Protein Powder and premake into 1 oz shots)
Sugar free gatoraide
Sugar free Popsicles.
Unjury powders

I've also got plain fat free greek yogurt, P2 powder, eggs, and liquid stevia on the list to jumpstart week two.

I'm also planning some socially distant coffee dates in the next week with a few close friends who I'm not telling about my surgery but who might notice I'm off the radar for a while.

Would love to know what you guys are doing to prepare?

ONWARD!

It was the best decision ever and like I hardly crave food anymore literally some days I don't even think about food so you won't miss it as much as you think...

This sounds soooo encouraging. I'm sitting here, 17 days away from surgery, and feel like I'm mourning a life-long friend. 😥

I rarely check in but I wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS!

I also kept this to myself. There are too many negative uninformed opinions you have no reason to listen to. Embrace this and allow yourself to feel whatever you feel including mourning foods you are giving up. As long as food funerals do not turn into binge eating to say goodbye, it's all okay.

I'm a long term veteran with the usual struggles for maintenance. Nothing special here. What I wish I knew twelve years ago is quite a list but these are near the top.

*First, everyone does not lose weight quickly or even steadily. Hormones and metabolism may fight your surgery BUT you will still have long term success.
*Second, your mind will screw with you in many ways depending on why you are obese and how you see yourself and your body. Anything from body dismorphia, to binge eating disorder, to obsessive compulsive behaviors may emerge.

Get your head straight and understand YOUR obesity. Surround yourself with support just as you are doing online and with in person support. Be open to including therapy if you repeatedly fall off your plan. Shut down negative people. Not the supporters who try and keep you on your plan. I'm taking about the fat people haters and the anti surgery crowd.

Your feelings are as expected a few days pre-op. I made a desperate post about intense hunger at the start of my pre-op diet. Smaller meals, Protein Shakes, plenty of hydration and only half a day of no food. LOL!

Enjoy the build up to your big day. Take a few before pics and get your home and kitchen set up for recovery. Stick to your plan and remember this is for life. When you've maintain for a decade you'll think back to now with gratitude for having wls.

Wishing you the best health and a long and happy life!

@Lilly66

I must agree that WALKING, as much as you can and as soon as you can aids recovery! Within a couple hours of waking up in my room I was doing laps around the bariatric center.
(In my pre-op room I greeted my surgeon then awoke in my room post-op. In between remains a blank.)

When seated I "wrote" the alphabet with my feet every half hour as instructed. Then I walked some more.

Twice I hit the narcotics button in fear of pain that never came. I had showered and dressed on my own when the surgeon came to see me. State law made me wait five hours to be released the day after my RNY (vs 3-5 nights expected). I walked every hour until I was released.

Walking not only gets that gas moving. It prevents blood clots in ways medications can't match. This is true for almost any surgical procedure.

Miss MEOW, this is my 3rd and last post.
I do not mean to hijack your thread. I'm just long winded and this really takes me back. All this enthusiasm warms my heart and brings back memories. Pre or post, you ALL inspire me to maintain.

I don't think I've input my stats but RNY is the best thing I've ever done for myself. After bouncing between 235lbs & 285lbs for years my regular weight is below 140lbs. It's still a struggle. My weight still fluctuates. However, I've never bought a larger size since getting below 140lbs. I'm 5'4" and 58 years old with chronic health issues unrelated to weight. However, I'm in the best health I could hope for given my auto immune disorders. WLS gets a lot of the credit.

Keep sharing and inspiring each other. Support is proven to increase success rates. Congratulations to everyone!

You've put it into words beautifully, @chunkarella. This is how I feel. To me it's not the food that is the problem. It's that it made me fat. My husband and I have been together for over 25 years. we eat similarly. He is trim and healthy. I'm obese. My body feels like the enemy. Not the food. But I believe this is the right step because I can't change genetics.

@MaybeMeow this! So much this. My surgery got moved up a week and is supposed to be 6/19. I am so nervous. I started this process in January. I was gung-ho on getting healthy, started orange theory and thought I’d lose a bunch of weight before the surgery so that I’d have an easier time. Then my back issues started coming back... and then lockdown from covid and anxiety hit the roof. Instead of losing weight, I’ve gained 15lbs waiting for the surgery. I thought I had 4 more weeks to get back on track but it looks like I’m starting the liquid diet on Friday. I’m 5’2”, 230 lbs now. I thought I’d have more time. food funerals have been frequent and I’ve been eating more - a ton more even for me. I’ve also kept this process to myself with just my spouse in the know.

And I can’t believe I just wrote that.

Any preppers today?

I didn't do much except pay for surgery (oh boy) and resist carbs... until after dinner when I had dessert. But for me that's a victory. Trying to reduce bit by bit. 8 more days til surgery. How's everyone feeling?

We are twins. I've gained 10 pounds these last two weeks. I will lead the way with surgery on the 9th and share as much with you as possible.

I ordered the Barbecue Protein Crisps here from BariatricPal, and find them quite tasty. The Ranch flavour, not so much. They are very filing and have a satisfying crunch.
I continue to shrink, and am amazed at the changes all over my body. Visually, it is striking to me. In the mirror, I look thin to my eyes, but I don't feel thin, although I can see more bones and veins and tendons and floppy skin. Cardio-wise, It takes a lot more effort to get my heart rate up and I'm now monitoring which heart zone I can get into and for how long. My resting heart rate is the lowest it's ever been.
If I think about it, and I left myself feel it for a time, I weep (like, boohoo cry) with joy. I am so grateful to myself, and proud of myself for having the courage to have taken the leap to better health.

Feeling a little sad today because a few weeks ago I had a call from the surgeon's office and they had a last minute opening on November 20 because of a cancellation. I am not scheduled until December 27, which is way later than I had expected when I started all this. My "ideal" date in my head had been November 13. I was so ready to jump at the chance, but I just couldn't make it work. As soon as I mentioned it to my mom, instead of being supportive, she had all sorts of reasons why I shouldn't move the date. Some were valid, like my teen daughter has a special (but not super special) thing going on later in the week that I would probably have to miss, and others were less valid, like she didn't feel ready and it might ruin everyone's holidays. Um, excuse me? It's not about her! And how would I single handedly ruin both Thanksgiving AND Christmas for my entire family by having a surgery? But she had informed me when I first got the December date that she planned on getting a hotel near the hospital and staying that night to be nearby, despite the hospital only being about 40 miles away from home. I didn't ask her to do that, but that's her plan, so there you go. She didn't ask me if I felt ready now, or what the wait through the holidays felt like for me with the surgery looming. So that was the part that hurt. I felt like I was having to make sure everyone else was okay with my choices instead of me, which is a theme in my life for sure. Don't get me wrong, my parents have been there for me so many times, and I don't want to sound ungrateful. But this really made me sad that what I wanted simply didn't factor in. Basically, I passed on what felt like a dream come true to get that call, and I've had to reconcile myself to it as best I can. I've found some silver linings, like more time to clean my house and test some recipes. But if I hadn't, I would be on my pre-op diet now (my surgeon only does a short liquid diet beforehand, so a Monday surgery starts the pre-op diet on Saturday morning). Instead, I'm getting ready to make dinner for myself and the kids, and I still have 39 days to go...

I can relate to the parent's situation. I am 42 and still struggle with pleasing them. Yet they do whatever they want with no concern for how it affects anyone else, so why do I feel so obligated to them? I wish I had some advice that could help. One thing I have tried to do is stop sharing things with them that I really don't want to hear their opinion on. (like the business I am starting)

Like with this surgery, I knew I was going to need their help getting to the appointments and back from the surgery, so I knew I had to tell them. But I did not tell them until I was almost at the point of getting surgery that I was doing this.

I got hard judgment from my father, which I expected, I made him promise not to share this with his brothers (who are assholes) I told him whether he likes it or not I am an adult and I deserve respect and privacy especially when it concerns my health. (he begrudgingly agreed)

My mom on the other hand was supportive, but she has the tendency to add some dramatic flair about everything. her typical M.O. is to pop onto social media and rattle on about how something that is not happening directly to her, is affecting her ( I get it there no talking to the man she married about this stuff, so it's nice to have someone to listen).

I know they both struggled with trying to respect my wishes, they looked shocked when I told them that if I lived somewhere else, I would not have even told them I was having this surgery.

      2. NickelChip

I'm glad your father did agree to respect your privacy by not sharing with your family. And I guess I should be glad my mom keeps the dramatic flair off of the socials!

I'm both lucky and unlucky that my brother had VGS 15 years ago. On the one hand, my mom understands the concept and has seen my brother's good results from it, (we inherited the obesity from my father's side, and Mom has never dealt with more than those pesky 10 lbs average weight people always want to lose). On the other hand, my brother took exactly the opposite approach from me. He didn't live near family and told no one, had no support. He went to Mexico as self-pay and didn't say a word until about 4 weeks after when he was having some serious emotional struggles, living alone, and compounded by the fear of realizing that to get family support, he had to "confess." So his recovery was very different than what I anticipate for me. But because of all that, my mom definitely sees this as a "REALLY BIG DEAL." Which it is, but not the level she's at with it. Like, it's not an open heart surgery being performed in 1982, or experimental cancer treatment. I've also noticed that as my mom ages, she takes change a lot harder. She doesn't have the mental flexibility anymore to make an instant change of plans and roll with it, whereas I do that probably a dozen times a day.

I'm grateful for their help, but it comes at a price.
