So I went to Sams yesterday to buy a box of Premier Protein shakes. $17 and some change for a 12 pack. I spotted Fairlife Protein Shakes for $15 and some change. I bought the Fairlife choclate with 30 gm of Protein and it is pretty good stuff. I will be drinking this brand from now on.

I am staying in the 600 to 700 calorie range and getting my 60 gm of Protein in each day. I am not having any issues getting in my liquids . I am also on a Vitamin regimen which is going fine also.

Still having pain on right side. If I stay still I am fine. Coughing or laughing hurts.

I had all of those weird pains in the first few months too. I was fine after I healed. Until what feels like a sore stomach muscle started up. Hoping it is still part of the healing process and not something like a hernia.

You are doing well. I really wonder if the lack of full sensation could still be that your nerves need to heal. I get full quickly now on one scrambled egg and definitely feel it. If I eat 1/2 slice of bacon I am only able to eat 1/2 egg without feeling horribly uncomfortable.

Maybe that is it. I don't know. I would think that if it was too much I would feel sick or something. I am wondering if because I was sleeved for almost 3 years that I have a loose pouch. With the sleeve I would eat an egg, 2 or 3 slices of bacon, and grits.

You are over 6 months out. I would think you wouldn't be sore anymore. Hope you will be seeing Dr. soon so you will have peace of mind knowing.

I’m glad you’re feeling better😊 keep us posted. Granted my bypass was 17 years (now reversed) ago but being able to eat an egg, half piece of bacon and 1/4 biscuit does seem like a lot so soon out...your pouch should be 30 cc if my homework is correct. Ask your doc how big your pouch is.

He said it was the size of a shot glass. I chew my food with this pouch to a pulp and am wondering if it is just sliding through ? I haven't been sick or felt bad from eating. I did however feel ill tonight after taking a Calcium chew on an empty stomach. I wont be doing that again.

Unless the biscuit is of giant size I don't think it's a lot, especially not when you take your time and chew really well.

I'm a bit surprised how much fat in meals some people can handle that soon after surgery but other than this I think many people on here eat minuscule amounts of food and/or calories. No wonder some of you say they feel like starving.

It's likely just sliding through

I was looking at my fat count per day and its averaging around 25 gm. I never paid too much mind with the sleeve either when it came to that. I was more focused on hitting my Protein goals and keeping carbs under 50 gm.

The last few days I am only hitting around 550 calories because I have been busy and I am not hungry. I am going to add an extra healthy snack to my meal plan today to get me to 700.

I have not felt hungry since I have had the surgery. Do you have hunger pains ? The only thing I can say is I have felt weird a few times and knew I needed to eat .

Do you feel food in your pouch or does it just slide on through you too ? The Dr. said I could try flaky fish or moist chicken and I am going to try the moist chicken tonight. He did not say how much so I am going to weigh out 2 oz and have nothing else with it and see how it goes .

I never counted fat grams as well. However, I can remember a scrambled egg with a bit of cheese (I still ate dairy then) being one of these too-heavy foods I tried too soon after surgery and had to puke several times. So my association of egg + bacon = too much fat in one sitting. Same with this ricotta bake many people eat soon after surgery.

I rarely feel physical hunger. Or maybe I'm just used to ignore the signals, no idea. I feel I eat more according to cravings than anything else but that's what I always did after WLS.

I sometimes can feel this slight lightheadedness that tells me it's time to eat but usually it's more subtle like getting more and more fidgety.

Somethings move through quicker than others. I find eating very very slowly, not just chewing a lot but also stepping away from my meals to do other things helps measure my fullness.

Unfortunately my full, filled or satisfied sensation comes around 15 to 18 mins after eating. Quite annoying really 😒

Can you describe what that full sensation feels like to you ? I ate the 2 oz of chicken and a few bites of corn. I didn't feel anything but I do burp when eating so I am taking that as my que to stop I guess.

I took a drink 30 min later and had pain in the right side of my rib cage. Not sure what it was.

I hope you feel better soon. Hang in there, it takes time to get better. 🙂
I hv my revision on June 24, and I’m starting to get kinda nervous. I have a hiatal hernia to hv fixed and then gastric bypass. Do they put drainage tubes in ur stomach for a revision?

Thank you, I actually have felt pretty good for the last 2 days.

I had one drain in until the morning I left and I am assuming it was because of the hiatal hernia repair. I didn't notice it for the most part. I had a binder on the whole time and I don't know how people manage without them those first 10 days.

Ur welcome. That’s good that your starting to feel better. The tubes are what I’m worried about. 😳idk y. My mom had drainage tubes when she had surgery and they grossed me out, so that probably why & what’s making me the most nervous.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
