Advice needed - VSG Failure

Recommended Posts

Had VSG 4 years ago. SW 285. Got down to 215 within 4 months and never lost another pound. My weight would go down 3 lbs and up 2, then stall and restart. My surgeon acted like I was crazy when I talked to him about why I couldn’t lose consistently. Started regain 7 months post-op and now I’m back up to 250. My hunger never left, I was hungry day after surgery. I vomit still when I eat dense or dry foods and therefore sometimes avoid Proteins for carbs to avoid discomfort and vomiting. Acid reflux is awful too. I wish I had bypass instead as I’m nauseous and uncomfortable every day either hungry, heartburn or uncomfortable. Thoughts?

Oh wow...I’m sorry to hear this, and I hope it gets better. Are you thinking of having a revision?..

That's unfortunate... But you're one of many who wished they knew about the GERD and chose bypass...

I chose bypass as my first ever surgery and it went well and one has no issues and only one stall and I've lost a record 156lb since started my pre surgery diet 8m 3 wks ago :)

Never felt better.

WoW!!! I've heard of horror stories and sure sounds like you had a bad experience with this process!!!! From the beginning the doctor advised me that this is a tool and you need to treat it as a tool. 100% of the responsibility was on me and I acted accordingly. So I am a year out and I only have good things to say about my process. Maybe speak to your doctor about a revision. But, I was also told that if VSG didn't work you only have about a 1% chance of the bypass working so those are not good odds.. Good luck to you and keep us posted....

This is interesting. I have not heard this before, but then again I have not looked into a revision (I am only 5 months post-op)

Maybe you can speak with a surgeon about a revision or speak to a doctor in a medically supervised weight loss program. I wish you the best.

surgeons seem quick to blame vsg patients don't they, sounds like a revision to bypass would be good.

yeah, I suppose this is true. I have been listening to the BariatricPal podcast and one of the speakers that does research in bariatric surgery and why it works has a lot of interesting and informative things to say about why some people lose a lot of weight very easily after surgery and some people dont. I highly recommend the podcast.

oh sounds interesting thanks, I shall check it out :) it's one of those things that fascinates me, because you read on here the big differences/struggles people are having. I'm having the opposite problem and don't feel well with it so can't even enjoy it, speaking to my surgeon this week tho before i end up with a bmi of 10 :P

For sure, I am glad that I was able to direct you to a positive resource :) I have only just recently found the podcast. There are not a ton of episodes but I really loved listening to them. Don't worry, I don't think you will dwindle into nothingness :P , but definitely see what your doctor says.

I have been one of the people that has had to really fight for weight to come off :(, but its still worth it.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
