Help! Hair Shedding

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm a little over 6 months post op and my hair is shedding ALOT. My hair has never she'd so much and I fear I might go bald more than two handfuls of hair. I've heard this could be a side effect of surgery. Has anyone else experienced this? and does it ever stop?? Please help.

it happens to lots of us - and yes, it'll stop. And it'll most likely all grow back, too. I started shedding around month 5 and it went on for maybe three months.

I’m six months postop and have been shedding horrible for about three months now the doctor said it’s normal but I hope my hair grows back because if not I’m going to be bald within the next few months. They say it could be from lack of Protein and I do have a problem hitting my protein goal so this month I’ve been really tracking my food intake and trying to get to my protein intake a day

I started shedding at 3 months, kept going until about month 7.

I'm 1.5 years out now, and it's pretty much all grown back. Mind you the new hairs are about 3-ish inches long so they stick up in some places, lol. I know eventually they will grow long enough to lay flat.

Hi! I've experienced the same thing! I started using women's Rogaine 5% minoxidil unscented foam around 4 months ago and is starting to see my hair come back. Hope this helps!

I also experienced excess shedding even though my hair was VERY healthy before surgery. My excess shedding started at 2 months and slowed down recently (5 months post op). It will stop eventually. If it doesn't stop after being 12 months post-op, you may want to speak with your surgeon.

DO you still use Minoxidil? They say once you start it, you have to be basically on it for life....in case you've stopped it..did you see hair fall out again? thanks

The shock of the surgery on your body & reduced caloric diet has accelerated your natural Hair loss cycle. It’s very common. You can’t stop it happening because it’s a natural occurrence just sped up. Some people lose a lot some only a little. Some only lose for a short time, others a long time. But it will stop. Four months seems pretty common but how far along you are on your weight loss journey & your general health may make effect how long it persists.

You already have new hair growing, you just don’t notice it because it grows so slowly. Remember you don’t normally notice your new Hair growth which is happening all the time. It only grows about half an inch each month in a healthy person consuming way more calories than you are on your diet.

Save your money on products that promise to stop it falling out. It’s already destined to fall out. Vitamins to promote hair growth will likely only strengthen your new hair growth not the hair you have.

You’ll be ok. Good luck.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
