Which Vitamins do you use for bypass (revision)!?

I bought some on Amazon 4m ago as I thought I was having the revision in March But COVID has other plans for me :-(

So I bought Bariatric Fusion - vitamins: chewable and Iron chewable soft chews. Omg. horrendous tasting.

What do you like?

I was thinking of doing Flinstones again like I did with my sleeve. Maybe some gummies.

The mixed berry flavor is the only flavor that tastes good. But they are delicious! I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night after my revision to bypass. No other Vitamins needed.

I have used the Vitamin Patch since my sleeve 4 years ago, and have continued them since my bypass.

a lot of surgeons don't recommend gummies.

I've been taking Centrum Senior (or the generic equivalent) since day one. You have to take two a day to meet the ASBMS requirements. I started with the chewables and switched to regular tabs when I was a few months out. For Iron, I've been taking Sundown Perfect Iron which was cheap and wonderful, but it was discontinued about a year ago (luckily I was able to scarf up a bunch of bottles on eBay and Amazon), so I'll be looking for something else once this last bottle runs out. Whatever I get it'll have to be carbonyl iron, because some of the other forms of iron are too hard on my stomach. Carbonyl is great. A lot of people like heme iron, too, because it also is easy on stomachs (although it's more expensive than carbonyl).

Why Centrum SILVER? age or just Vitamin requirement - I'm 52, so I can take them - just making sure, as I want to really start taking things today while on the liquid diet.

I'm going to look at the iron too today Walgreens..

Both. I'm in my 60s, but i started taking Silver in my 50s because it has no iron in it. I have to take iron separately because i need much more than what is in a standard Multivitamin. Plus those standard Multivitamins contain both Calcium and iron (which supposedly cancel each other out) (plus the calcium that's in them isn't very absorbable, but that's another issue...)

Thumbs up!!! :) Yes, I need take separate iron, due to being anemic...

I assume I need to stop taking it prior to surgery, unless things have changed, I'll find out tomorrow when I have my tele conference with my surgeon.

I need small Vitamins, are they tiny? These iron chews from Bariatric fusion are horrendous tasting too .... maybe my tastes have changed, unsure. The calcium chews, Vita something, caramel, are okay - but rather have calcium in a pill form. I have to get to Walgreens or CVS and see what they offer.

Yes, Calcium I thought helped Iron absorption? maybe I'm thinking of something else.

How does vitamins absorb without having s stomach to sit in :) hehe, dumb question it sounds.. but I'm serious LOL : )

you're thinking of Vitamin C (that's needed to absorb iron). Some iron supplements have Vitamin C already in them - but if yours don't, then you're supposed to take Vitamin C with them. I take two chewable vitamin C tabs with my iron.

calcium and iron have to be taken at least two hours apart, because I think they both try to bind to the same things - so if you take them at the same time, one is going to keep the other from absorbing. If you take them two hours apart, you'll be fine.

those calcium tablets can be pretty big, but both CVS and Walgreens carry generic "petite" tabs. Make sure you get calcium citrate because it's easier to absorb.

and yes - you usually have to stop all vitamins (well, and most meds, too - unless they specifically tell you not to) before surgeries. I had to stop taking them before my two plastic surgeries, too - i think a week or two before.

I always wondered that about pills, too - but I think vitamins are usually absorbed in the small intestine rather than the stomach - and the thing has to dissolve enough to be able to pass through the stoma (or the pylorus), so you're probably getting most of it.

as far as Centrum Silver (or the generic equivalent) - they're just standard-size vitamins. Not tiny - but not the size of regular calcium tablets, either

Thanks. I’m off to Walgreens. I used to take the petite also remember a vitamin that was that way too. This is a long time ago so who knows. Things change all the time.
You’re right, it’s absorbed in the intestines.

This is what my program recommends for Sleeve and Bypass:

Morning:
• One A Day Women’s Vitamin
Vitamin D 2,000
Vitamin B12 500 mcg
• Vitron C Iron

Noon
• Viactive Calcium
With Dinner
• Viactive Calcium
Evening
• Viactive Calcium

I keep track of it with a free app called Medisafe. The only chew is the Calcium. I think at 1.5 years out I could probably get rid of some of it, but I feel great and my bloodwork is always good, so I just take it. I get most of these generic at CVS so it's 20% off and BOGO.

hi - my nutritionist emailed me a new revised, pre and post bariatric plan... was unsure if it was different from my previous surgery.

She has, per day -

Vitamin - Bariatric Advantage with or without Iron, Celebrate Mutli with Iron - 18mg, 35, 45, and 60mg too - Bariatric fusion - all one per day.

calcium citrate and Vitamin D - Bariatric Advantage, Celebrate, Bariatric Fusion or ReViva Calcium

Calcium is 1200-1500mg and vitamin D - 400-800IU unless deficient 2000IU

Iron with Vitamin C - 250mg

vitamin B12 - 350-500mg

I'm going to make a list and order it so I have it when I return home from surgery.

Has anyone had the above mentioned brands - I was thinking it doesn't really matter as long as the dosages are the same - etc...

Like someone said, Walgreens or CVS generics are just fine.

:) I'll compare everything before I order

I always have some Bariatric Advantage calcium chews around - they're great for traveling or carrying in my purse so I can pop some Calcium when I'm away from home (although I suppose I could just lug some calcium tablets around, too...). Anyway, they're pretty good!

here are the ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgeons) supplement guidelines (you have to scroll way down to Table 6). As long as your supplement meets (or exceeds) the guidelines, you're good:

I read in some of the Amazon comments in my link that a few people got a bad batch that tasted horrible. Maybe that happened to you? They taste like sweet tarts to me. I like them a lot. Of course your tastes could be different than mine as well

I do not have to take any other Vitamins with these like you see others posting. My blood work is perfect so far.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
