But with bypass isn't the dumping syndrome the physical restriction? ( I'm new here and doing my research) , please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sent from my SM-A705FN using BariatricPal mobile app

I don't dump at all. I can eat Cookies, cake, whatever. I feel sick to my stomach if I overdo it but I dont get dumping syndrome. (RNY)

Dr. Matthew Weiner has a lot of informational videos on YouTube. He covers a wide range of topics, I’ve learned a lot by watching him. This first video on metabolic thermostat/set point was a lightbulb moment for me.

How bariatric surgery changes your hunger, metabolism and even your tastes for certain foods.

This one is titled: Bariatric revisions, Will they help or not?

You wanna trade ? lol

I haven't tried any of that stuff but I figure if I am dumping on 8 grams of sugar in Cereal then I am gonna dump on everything. I am hoping after a few months it will stop. I would like to lose 10 or 15 more lbs and try some braums frozen yogurt twist in a cup.

How are you doing with weight loss now? I just wanted to give you some encouragement. I had a MGB in February, and have lost 45 from the day of surgery (I have lost a little more, but only if you include the 2 week pre-op diet). It’s been slow, but pretty steady with only a few stalls. So I’m averaging 10 lbs a month while only eating around 800 cals a day and getting in at least 10,000 steps a day. It can be frustrating when you read about others who aren’t exercising, are ingesting more, weigh less than you do, and are losing faster. I just have to assume that my metabolism is a bit messed up. But I’m determined to continue to lose weight.

I thought bypass would be more restrictive. It’s less space for food to fit in. Could someone explain? I have to have bypass due to reflux already

I guess if it isn't your first surgery you may not feel restriction. I had not felt anything until recently when I started eating about 3 oz of firm Protein. Last night I had shrimp and steak stir fry and I finally felt something. Seems like everything else just basically goes right through. Good luck

If you are asking me I have lost 9 lbs so far which is really good for me considering I weigh 171.2 . I never got under 164.8 so I would like to see if I can get to 155 but I am not going to kill myself to do it. I have a large frame and am weighing around my high school weight and I am okay with how I look.

I am eating around 700 to 800 . You are doing great to average 10 lbs a month on a revision. How much weight are you wanting to lose?

Ok, that makes more sense. My friend had a revision from lapband to sleeve and says she can eat way more than when she had her lapband. she was having issues with food getting stuck all the time. Definitely seeing how everyone is so so different.

Yes and the problem is that people like me may have been counting on having at LEAST the same restriction we went into having to do a revision. This sadly isn't the case and so confusing to get my head around.

It irritates me even more that I had picked this surgery to begin with and went with the surgeons advice to do the sleeve. Had I done this surgery first I more then likely would not have gotten the erosive esophagitis and I would have the restriction this bypass came with as a virgin surgery. I don't see how people do this as a way to lose regain, I truly don't coming off a sleeve and I understand why the girl who started this post is upset about all the weight she has to try and lose with no restriction. I mean really what is the point ? She is doing it all on her own as far as I am concerned.

Interesting thought. Maybe that is a reason why revision weight loss is often quite disappointing?

Have you progressed to really solid "solids"? You need to be patient. I feel like I have about the same restriction I had with the MGB, maybe a bit more 3.5 months out and I guess it will be about the same as before later on.

If progressing to eating really solid "solids" doesn't solve your problem it might be time to incorporate more of less calorie dense foods into your diet. That way you can embrace the feeling of less restriction without gaining weight. It might be helpful to read about the "pound of cure" or watch some of Dr. Weiner's videos about the diet he prescribes his WLS patients.

I have eaten solids and I do feel something. I guess my problem is that it is not the same kind of restriction that I am used to. When I ate any foods at all with the sleeve it was the same feeling as if I had a regular sized stomach. I use to joke that it felt like Thanksgiving almost everyday with the sleeve. We are talking a few bites of food and not just Protein. That kind of restriction is what I was expecting.

I will be okay. I have no choice. I just think that it would be a lot easier to gain with this bypass then the sleeve but I suppose if you are a true food addict and don't get yourself under control that either surgery would eventually be a let down and a person would regain.

Restriction can be different form procedure to procedure. The lapland has a very different kind of restriction. Luckily I prefer the restriction of a bypass. It feels more... "natural".

For the first days I could feel the pressure just below the xiphoid (with both MGB and RNY), then it changed to the feeling of a "full stomach", spreading over the whole epigastric area. I thought of this as very fascinating both times. An interesting adaption of the body to the new situation. Phantom stomach instead of phantom limb.

One can regain with every procedure. Even quite a few DS patients complain about regain.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
