June 2020 surgeries

Hey! I had my VSG on June 23rd and let me say... the last few weeks have been complete HELL for me. I am going to add that I am 22 y/o with no prior complications, surgeries or medical issues besides obesity.

Post-op I was having a lot of pain (my surgeon sends his it’s home with Tylenol 1000mg) and nothing would relieve it. I had constant nausea and vomiting, even though I was just sipping water...the 64oz a day seemed impossible.

Around post-op day 3 I told my surgeon that the pain was unbearable and that I couldn’t even get myself out of bed or wipe myself in the bathroom. He said this was unusual but ordered Tylenol w/ codeine. And my case RN assured me that all pain and discomfort would be gone by post-op day 5.

Post-op day 5 comes and I have diarrhea, shortness of breath, and still can’t move without assistance. The pain is unbearable. I call my surgeon and he says to go to the ER.

Long story short I get admitted to the ER with 2 abdominal abscesses and pylonephritis. I stayed in the Hospital for 6 days and literally only sipped on Water with some sips of apple juice. On the last day the doc said I also had severe GERD and that was attributing to the pain.

Now I am home, feeling a little stronger but have ABSOLUTELY NO desire to eat anything. I tried to drink some Protein Shakes but I just kept gagging. I am still weak but the stomach pain has gone down. I sincerely hope nobody else has to go through this.

I would really appreciate any tips anyone has for getting in full liquids or more Water. I feel so scared to advance because of the pain. Thanks in advance!

I just want to say, I am sorry you on going through this and prayerfully things will get better for you.

A little frustrated right now with my weight loss slowing/stalling for a long time. I am just starting soft foods and don't think I have broken 600 calories in a day yet.

Had the surgery on June 8th, exactly four weeks ago. I had lost 27lbs on the liquid diet (they make us do it for 3 weeks at my clinic), then the first time I weighed myself 10 days after surgery I had lost another 16lbs.

In the 18 days since then, 4lbs... with a 10 day complete stall in the middle. I had read that it can happen, I was pretty dehydrated after the surgery and apparently your liver needs to get back to normal size after the liquid diet and that adds some weight.

I know it is mostly mental, but with eating so little, I kind of expected a pound a day early on like this. I try to tell myself that if I hadn't been weighing myself and if you had told me that one month out from surgery I would be down around 20lbs, and about 50lbs total including the liquid diet period, I would have been fine with it.

Just closing in on 3 weeks with really modest weight loss is discouraging. I really want to break that 300lb barrier for some motivation.

I am in the same boat! I had a switch done on June 10th, and I’ve plateaued at 30lbs weight loss. I’ve been sitting at 328 for the past week and a half and I’m frustrated. I’ve finally started getting in all of my Water, but it’s hard for me to get in all of my Protein. I’m on stage 4 of my diet, as that’s what my clinic wants us to do in order to keep our pouch from forming incorrectly.

I’m going to sign up at the gym to swim, and hopefully that kicks the weight loss into gear.

Keep your head up and don’t give up! We can all do this together!

I just started the soft foods stage. Dr. gave the OK to start stage early since I tolerated the puree stage well and my BMI is now below 30. "REAL" food taste so good after having nothing but liquid. My starting weight was 191, current weight is 177. I still find it hard to get in the optimal Water intake. I never drank a lot of water before so it will always be a challenge. Yesterday at lunch was the first time I over ate (was in a hurry) and boy did I pay the price. It felt like I had a huge rock under my breast bone. I wasn't able to eat anything else the rest of the day and I had bad acid reflux half the night. It was not fun. Even though I have to choke down the Protein Shakes , I will probably have to continue to have 1 each day to make sure I get in enough Protein. I don't want to have gone through all of this to only end up thinner but flabby because I lost a lot of muscle. I'm 54 so I need to keep as much muscle as possible because age is not on my side.

My surgery was the 26th and I’m still on my liquid diet. I can drink Water and Powerade just fine, but when I try to drink a Protein Shake I instantly get nauseated. I am not getting nearly the Protein I shod be

You might want to get some unflavored whey Protein isolate powder and add some to the liquids you are drinking. You might want to try several different brands of shakes. Each person "tolerates" some better than others.

We are surgery twins. My weight loss has for sure slowed down. I'm sure it will pick back up and even out for us.

I’m 5 weeks post op today. I lost zero pounds week 3 and 4, which was discouraging but I anticipated happening. Down 4 this morning so I think my stall has broken! Down 34 total and feeling really great.

Yay! I lost 15 pounds the first 2 weeks but I’m definitely in the week 3-4 stall, lol. Haven’t lost a thing since last week and I’m almost 4 weeks post op. Fingers crossed it breaks soon!

I am in the same boat G8trgrl. I am 4 weeks out. I lost 20 lbs the first two weeks but have stalled the last two weeks. I know it happens but you can’t help but wonder if your doing something wrong.

Just getting out of a long bit of a stall...

It was frustrating to spend the better part of a month with only about 1lb a week loss. I had lost a bunch on the 3 week liquid diet and then a bunch in the first two weeks post surgery so overall it was fine.

Now 6 1/2 weeks post op and down 28lbs since surgery and 55lbs overall since start of liquid diet.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
