Never had a Q pump in. It sounds interesting!

Not at all common in the U.S. - can’t speak to whether it is used often elsewhere. Never known of anyone to use one before you and I have worked in healthcare for too long 😹

That’s the first thing I checked when I read the post, thinking I was going to see some European country. Who knows, maybe your surgeon went to some seminar and learned about it and decided to use it!

I had my surgery (gastric sleeve) on Monday and it went really well. After my surgery, I was up and walking around, even though I was hopped up on morphine. The first two days were a bit rough. I was pretty hard to even drink Water. I am lactose intolerant and cannot stand the taste of milk, but that was the only thing that I could drink that remained down without any pain or air bubbles.

Today has been great, I've still struggled a bit to get all my Protein in, but I think by next week I will have all the proper nutrition down. Also waiting to poop too. Good luck to everyone who has future surgeries. And congrats to all of you who have already had yours.

Hello everyone, I'm new on here. I am feeling a little nervous and kind of having second thoughts. My friend told me to go on here and that this app will helping me a lot. My sleeve suergy will be on June 15 at 7:30 am. The doctor just told me to be on a liquid diet the day before and told me I will go home the same day. I havent heard no one go home that soon. Is that normal?

Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

My surgery was outpatient too. I got to the surgical center at 7:30am, started my surgery around 10am and was out by 12:30pm. They kept me there for 6 hours after the surgery just to ensure I was okay and had not complications. It may be that you are lower risk which is why you're able to have it on an outpatient setting.

I LOVE coffee, and while it doesn’t sound super appealing right now, I do miss the ritual of it. This morning I made a Decaf coffee with some skim milk and it tasted like sewage, no exaggeration. I hope that doesn’t last, but so crazy how my tastebuds have changed!

Hello everybody! Had a revision from sleeve to RNY on 6/8. Had my sleeve in 2015 and lost the weight and kept it off for a while. I previously had a pretty unfriendly doctor and when I started having awful, awful acid reflux, he would usually describe it as user error “what are you eating to cause it, etc.” it was pretty rough on me because I felt like all my acid was caused by me and I was failing myself! Then I got on anxiety and depression medication (and the playing around with dosages and prescription) and the weight all of a sudden piled on. I luckily saw a billboard for my current surgeon and on a whim, decided to see if he had tips at least to get the weight loss started again. He was so sweet and helpful and made me realize there were some factors out of my control and the revision was a good plan!

Was originally planned for March but COVID delayed and I really struggled with a lot of guilt for gaining/falling off the wagon during quarantine. My doctor was not concerned at all. Hope that helps some of you feeling guilty!

Some things that have been helpful for me:
* No one knows your body as well as you do. I wish I had been a bit more insistent with my first doctor about the acid reflux - but know I won’t be that way anymore!
* I desperately asked my nurses to help me get up and pee in the middle of the night and no one came! I got myself up and did it myself because I had been walking around a lot during the day. Apparently I overexerted myself and gave myself “deep stitch” pain. It was unbearable! Felt like a jab in my left side anytime I did anything! Doctor recommended Aspercreme with Lidocaine to numb the area and alternate between heating pad and ice pack. Also have been using a toddler pillow to press on that area as I stand (like an extra compression of a binder) and that’s been more helpful than I expected!
* If watching tv, avoid watching commercials. I found that seeing a pizza commercial made me think I was hungry when I definitely wasn’t! (More applicable to sleeve. Haven’t had any hunger pangs with RNY)
* Would also like to recommend BariatricPal 25g whey Protein & collagen Power Shots - Crisp Apple only 3oz to drink but gets you 25g of protein!
Grateful to have this forum, didn’t even think about it last time! Good luck to everyone else with upcoming surgeries. It can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel the first few weeks when you’re in pain but when I had the sleeve, I forgot all about the pain and just was so grateful for it!!

Yes, my first night was rough too. I had horrible dry mouth until I was able to keep more fluids down. It does get better, I promise. Just hang in there.

My surgery is coming up on Tuesday (6/16), so I had to go in and get my COVID-19 test today. I was really dreading it and building it up in my mind (pretty silly thing to be focused on given the surgery I'm about to have), so I'm glad it's over with.

Overall, it wasn't as bad as I expected. It definitely sucked, but I would describe it as extreme discomfort with very minimal pain, and it was all over very quickly. They're sicking a long swab somewhere where nothing is supposed to go, so every instinct in my body said "get that thing out of there", but it's not like it was very painful or anything. The whole thing was over in a matter of a couple of seconds and I was left with some teary eyes and a slightly roughed-up feeling nose, but no worse than after a few days with a cold when your nose starts to feel a little raw. That was about an hour ago and it's already feeling mostly back to normal.

Overall I'm happy that it's over with and I can start focusing on my more rational fears, like having 80% of a major organ removed in a couple of days 🙂

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
