June 2020 surgeries

Recommended Posts

My surgery is slotted for June 18th! I didn’t see any other posts for that date (but several for the 17th). I have a total of 4 weeks notice on my date so it was like 😮 !

Everything is looking good except one thing - because of covid-19 my husband can only see me in the recovery room but cannot be with me in the room at all at any point. 😢 Not going to lie, I am so seriously bummed about that. We live more than an hour’s drive from the hospital so he will have to guess when to return. I have an issue with my left leg and right hand (just the luck huh?) snd I would feel so much better walking with him after surgery than someone else.

But just feeling so rotten after surgery (as I did 48 hours after my hyster due to the gas) I would like someone there who can help as well as someone for just love and support. We are both super bummed. Maybe a miracle happens and that gets corrected over the next 2 weeks - here’s to hope!

I’m in Newfoundland, Canada. Heading to Toronto for my surgery tho. How are you finding the pre-op diet? What does yours include?

Hey y’all! I’m booked for my surgery on June 18. Sending the best vibes to all of you going in tomorrow! Can’t wait to hear how it went.
I’m 35, 5’4” tall and started my preop diet last week at 300lbs. My doctor required me to do 3 weeks of shakes and 250cals of low glycemic veggies per day. It’s been challenging to find ways to prepare veggies that don’t have any fat or salt...love for some suggestions!

Hello again! Sorry I missed this post the first time. As to your question on cooking veggies -

this may sound strange, but after being on weight watchers for five years I figured out that I could actually sauté vegetables in broth. And it’s good! I would use that better than broth paste, get a little bit of it with some Water and use it almost like butter for sautéed in a stirfry and the vegetables. You can add more you need to. You would think it wouldn’t work, but it works beautifully!

p.s. we were actually headed your way in June, but then our cruise was canceled. We were so bombed it had been years and we thought this would be a perfect time of year to visit again. But we will return. My pre-op diet is easy thank goodness. It’s basically two healthy steamer frozen meals under 300k and 2 Snacks each day for 2 weeks (so I just started it)l Those healthy choice meals were actually ones that I used every day for lunch, so that works perfectly.

I am 5’ 7.5” , about 225 (at least before the covid lockdown, not sure what it is now 😹). Having the sleeve done at an Atlanta hospital (we live about an hour’s drive outside). I had lost 100 pounds on my own through weight watchers over the course of three years, but with a leg injury then the death of my mother, my weight just ballooned again. Was heart breaking after all that hard work,

Hey @AlwaysCrusing . I’m worried about the limit of having my partner back there with me too. I haven’t heard from the hospital where the surgery is going to be done for a time/rules/etc yet. Hoping for an early surgery and that I can have someone with me.

I hope we both get lucky and have restrictions lifted prior. When he had to have a heart cath I spent the night on a cot in jeans. I didn’t sleep much, they came in the room a lot, but there was no way I was leaving. He is going to feel guilty not being there even if it isn’t his fault.

I will cross my fingers for you - we are in Atlanta and with such a diverse population (as well as the world’s largest international airport}, we got more than our fair share of covid-19 cases. I hope that you’re in the area that had very few cases, maybe their restrictions won’t be a staff. 🤞🏼

Surgery for me went very well Wednesday morning. Got to the hospital at 6:30. They took me back to pre-op about 7:30 (husband was allowed there with me). Changed into a gown, peed (for a pregnancy test, which I laughed at), got my IV, did a little bloodwork, and they put an anti-nausea patch behind my right ear. I woke up in recovery, stayed there until there was a bed upstairs. Did go to the bathroom for the first time in recovery, and felt pretty gross when I got back - which they said was totally normal. Got up to my room about 2pm - and took my first lap at 2:20. The goal was to get 3 laps done that night - and I did 4. The gas pain was no joke - but it was better by yesterday. Yesterday, I did 15 laps - I was really bored. Incision pain showed up last night - before that, I was able to sleep on my side in the hospital bed - but since I've been home - the recliner is my friend. I have a timer going off every 6 mins to do my lung exercises (supposed to get 10 an hour), as well as a sip of Water, or broth, or Protein Shake. I'm not hitting the numbers yet for grams of Protein or water - but really trying to listen to my new stomach. It's a delicate balance of not wanting to get dehydrated - but I don't want to push it either (I have a severe fear of vomiting). I still have the patch behind my ear - and I believe during surgery they gave me Zofran and Phenergan - but not afterwards. I got 2 shots of Morphine over 12 hours for pain on Wednesday. And then yesterday I took 2 Norco about 12 hours apart. I haven't taken anything yet today, even though I am a bit sore. I've been doing laps around my house - and even walked out side for 2 driveways. Not a ton of distance - but my goal is 40 mins total a day (doesn't have to be all at once). My husband was able to stay with me in pre-op; then he waited in the waiting room. The surgeon came out and told him how good everything had gone. He wasn't allowed to come to the recovery room with me (even though originally, the hospital had said he would be allowed). Instead, I only got to see him briefly when the rolled me to the elevator to go to my room. It was a very quick interaction, and I was sad he couldn't stay longer - but I understand the rules. My surgeon keeps his patients NPO until 5am the morning after - so I just had an IV, and lip balm for my chapped lips. I started sipping SUPER slow yesterday at 5am - I was lucky to get an ounce an hour. But that's just because I'm a huge chicken when it comes to vomiting - so I'm going SUPER slow. Surgeon came in around 9am checked my incisions, felt on my belly a little bit, and then said I could go home at 2pm. I've done a good bit more liquids today - but I'm sure I will come up short. Hoping that each day continues to get a little easier. So far, so good!

@havethree you're doing great! Thank you so much for sharing those details. They really help the rest of us prepare mentally. Keep sippin and Walkin. I'm so impressed with how smoothly it's going for you!

Hi all. I'm getting nervous. 4 days and counting. So I'm trying to stay busy prepping. Today's prep was making Protein Jello Shots and Protein pudding shots. sugar free strawberry Jello with genpro powder mixed in. I have 25 one-ounce "shots" that have 2 grams of protein a piece. Saving them for post op. The pudding is Fage fat free Greek blended with sugar free vanilla pudding. Each oz has 3 grams protein. Will use them starting post op day 3 to help me get thru clear and full liquids. I'll attach a pic. Took about 40 minutes to prep. I'm not much of a cook or meal planner but this was easy. How is everyone else prepping and feeling?

@MaybeMeow Your jello shots and pudding shots sound delish! My surgeon won't allow that until the soft foods stage - so I haven't stocked up on any of those, yet. I know some programs allow them - but mine does not. But then, he skips the pureed phase and goes from 2 weeks post op all liquid to soft foods for 4 weeks. I am sure I will steal some of those ideas when I'm cleared for soft foods 🙂 So I'm still Water, broth, Protein Shake. That's pretty much it. I haven't stepped on a scale yet. I plan on trying to wait until my 1 week post op visit. We'll see if I can hold out that long! I was so nervous even when they were wheeling me down the hall. I even asked my surgeon if I was doing the right thing. He said he thought so a few times in a row. I do trust him a lot. And the nurses adore him - said that they rarely see his patients back for readmission - even years down the road - so that was reassuring. Of course, they said that AFTER I was already through surgery - so who knows? It's really kind of surreal right now to be honest. I have 5 holes in my belly, and I get chest pressure sometimes when I drink, but I'm seriously not hungry at all. I know this is just a honeymoon phase - but it's just SO weird, y'all!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
