Reflux remains after revision 😩

Recommended Posts

I had revision from sleeve to bypass on 3/5, due to severe reflux. The day after surgery I already felt the reflux still, I’m so disappointed. I still have reflux, the medicine isn’t working to keep it away. It’s not as bad as it was before surgery but it’s still there daily and still wakes me up. Has anyone else had revision for reflux and not had it go away like me? What did you do next? My dr said maybe it will still go away, and if it doesn’t hopefully it won’t be as bad as it was before, I don’t accept that as an answer. It needs to go!

Are you taking any acid reducers for the first month or so after your surgery?

Yes, he has me on omeprozole for the first 30 days after surgery, but I also take Pepcid complete because the omeprozole isn’t enough

Hopefully some who have had a revision to bypass because of reflux will be able to add some suggestions, my only suggestion would be to make sure you are sleeping with a few pillows so you are sitting up a little, but I am guessing you are doing that already.

I am 4 months out and still taking Protonix. BUT, I'm now only taking it once a day instead of twice a day, and not having nearly as many reflux episodes which were nightly the first two months, even with the Protonix. My PA thinks I'll only have to take them another month and then not need them anymore. Hopefully you'll find a similar resolution-you are not even a month out yet. Try not to eat or drink anything near bedtime and that might help also. Good luck!

Took me about 2 months and the first two was on some little yellow pill

Also do not drink or eat a hour or so before going horizontal, that really helped me

although bypass USUALLY cures or at least dramatically improves it, it doesn't always. But you're still pretty early out. Our surgeon had us take omeprazole for a year after surgery (but that was back when they didn't know all the downsides to it - so I'm guess he's doing it for a much shorter length of time now - maybe 3-6 months - not sure). You may still end up being OK....

I have been trying to go off omeprozole and am afraid that my GERD will come back. I do get a little heartburn daily and have taken tums and that works, but I would rather not have to take anything!

Maybe you need a stronger dose until things stabilize. I'm personally taking 40mg a day, still experience reflux, but not as much as before. Just talk to your doctor see what their thoughts are.

Do you know what your trigger food is? I've been dealing with acid reflux for 30-some years and it took me most of them to figure out that too many CARBS triggers my reflux! Now that I'm aware of that, I eat way fewer carbs and definitely not within a couple of hours before bedtime. If I slip a little and feel the reflux starting, I take an Omeprezole, otherwise, I leave it in its bottle, and I'm down to a TUMS every once in a while instead of several times per day. Maybe if you try cutting back on certain things to see how it goes, you might be able to determine what your trigger is, too. I hope your reflux gets reduced/resolved soon.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
