I did go to a couple of restaurants the week before to eat things I knew I wouldn't be able to eat again for awhile, but I didn't go hog wild. I'd lost a ton of weight prior to surgery, so I didn't want to sabotage anything!

btw - I can eat almost anything now (I'm a few years out) except for super fatty meals. Most things "work" for me in moderation. So yes - you'll have to give up things, but you'll likely be able to eat them again at some point - again, in moderation.

Thanks so much for your post! How did you cope with not eating and drinking at the same time?

I thought that would be really tough to do, but actually, I got used to it really fast. I haven't done it since surgery almost five years ago.

yes - the dietitian I was working with for my six-month supervised diet (that my insurance required) had me "practice" it. It was a challenge at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly...

You mean like having a "food funeral" of a bunch of bad foods while you could still have them? Sure, that's common.

Concur, food funerals are common. I had no pre op diet and I got all kinds of cravings out of my system in the 3 weeks between approval and my surgery date. It didn't negatively affect my post WLS success.

Hell yea I did! My surgery was Jan 14. And I had all the holidays to enjoy. I ate EVERYTHING in sight. It was fantastic. I didn’t morn the loss of food at all. But it sure was great not to worry about weight gain etc and just eat!!!! Kind of like the all in diet a lot of professional fitness people do! :)

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I was having such problems with my lap band having slipped that I wasn't able to binge much before my revision surgery. I DID manage to eat a nice piece (or two) of cheesecake, which promptly made me barf, but it was worth it!

I did not go "crazy" but listed the last 5 foods I wanted, I had a pastrami sandwich, shrimp and grits, a southern BLT made with fried green Tomato and pimento cheese, and sushi. I paced this over 2 weeks and didn't gain a pound. I only wanted the best of food, not junk.

Nice choices, right up my alley ! Being a sushi lover I often have sushi post op, I order a specialty roll without rice. I have been to 3 different restaurants that will accommodate. It is 3ven more delish without rice, wish I realized 5hat pre op. I eat about 3/4 of the roll for dinner and bring the rest home for a snack

I know myself very well so during the eight months it took from when I first saw the bariatric doc up until my two week pre-op diet I started eliminating the things I wouldn't be able to eat after my surgery one by one. The first month I ate smaller portions with no seconds. The second month I cut out soda. The third month I cut out rice. The fourth month I cut out Pasta. Fifth month I cut out bread. Sixth month I cut out potatoes and Beans. And the following two months I just kept to the diet. On the day of my surgery I had lost 64 pounds. My doctor said my liver looked great. He said my surgery was remarkably easy because of my dedication to my pre-diet that I hadn't even been asked to do so that made me feel like it was totally worth it. I'm not even a month post-surgery yet and I'm in the second week of my soft foods diet and I'm really glad I did that pre-diet or else I'd be struggling. I do miss the oddest things though... I'm dying for a salad lol and I can't have that for another two months! I also miss peanuts! T.T

Honestly though, if you have good self control and eating your favorite foods before you can't anymore will make you happy then go for it! I, myself, have self-control issues which was the reason for my pre-diet. It helped me with those issues. Now I can find the will power to watch my family eat cake or donuts or Chinese food and not want to cheat.

I wish I didn't have a pre op diet but mines is all liquid with no food whatsoever. And I'm scared to cheat because I don't want my liver to be too big for surgery. How do some surgeons require you to have a preop diet but others don't it doesn't make any sense. I wonder if it is dependent on one how much weight you have to lose.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
