while you are trying to lose, do yourself a favor and try the turmeric. Just be sure that it has at least 10 mg of bioperine ( black pepper) in it and is 95% curcuminoids. Give it a week ir two of taking daily and you will be amazed what a simple spice can do for inflammation

Yes, and form turmeric, forms that are hydro-soluble will absorb better. Amazing results you have had! Congrats!

Thanks everyone! This is very helpful. It sounds like significant weight loss has helped a lot of folks with their chronic pain. I'm hoping the same will be for me, too. I thought most of my pain was postpartum related but my twins are nearly 1 now so it seems like that would've healed by now, or maybe my healing has slowed/stopped due to my weight. In any case, I have hope now! I was immobilized during my pregnancy and it was awful. I want to get back to moving again!

I’m down 86 lbs since surgery. This weekend my husband and I travelled to the LA area. We’ve walked at least 8 miles each day while here. I have NO pain in my feet, legs, and back. No way I could have done this a year ago. Plus, as an extra bonus, I had room to spare with my seatbelt on the plane and no fear of not fitting on the rides at Six Flags and Disneyland :)

I haven't had surgery yet, but I can say that the pain in my back, knees, and feet have only got worse as I've gained more weight. I bought a dance pad that I could hook up to my computer to play Stepmania 5 with, which made exercise a lot of fun, but you don't even have to do that. Turn on some music and dance for as long as you can. Any movement is better than none at all. As you lose weight, you'll be able to do more and more!

I definitely feel like my overall aches/pains/weaknesses have improved, and started to do so way earlier than 100 lbs lost. By the time I'd lost 40 or so lbs, I was already amazed at my noticeably increased energy levels and stamina, and how doing exercises that I was already doing at my high weight were worlds easier for me and could be done without strain. At 100+ lost it's almost inconceivable that I ever felt as much pain just from movement as I did before.

well to answer the question after the weight started to come off yes the pain does go away i have lost 160 and i dont take pain meds anymore at all i was eating a lot of vicoden prior for back feet and knees could not walk any distance as it hurt to bad and would get short of breath today i walk 5 miles a day and enjoy the freedom of no med s at all my balance took some time to catch up to my weight loss as i was wobly for a while now there is no pain when i wake up and none before bed i dont sleep with a heating pad on my back and ice on my knees anymore

I didn't experience pain while overweight. None that i can remember. However the amount of things I can casually do now is astounding.

I run (when needed) and rarely lose my breath, walk endlessly without a need for breaks, jumped rope, go up & down stairs like its nothing, any seat on a flight will do, random hiking trips, etc (but I gave up formal exercise - health reasons 😂)

I had started my WLS journey because I needed a right total hip replacement due to osteoarthritis and my ortho surgeon wanded my BMI to be under 40 before he would do it. Fast forward to the shots in my hip no longer working so I had my hip replaced on 5-29-2018. I had gastric bypass on 9-5-2018. Today I have lost 149 pounds and I am still recovering from my left total hip replacement on 1-17-2020. Recovery this time was so much easier - I was back to work in 17 days. I am still doing PT to make sure I have the proper gait and muscle recovery. I look back at pictures and think how did I walk 60 miles in 3 days with all this excess weight? Like everyone else, I only regret not doing the surgery sooner.

I had a rny on 12/20. Have lost ~50 pounds since my high weight. Have 50 more pounds to lose. My hip and back pain is already gone — it’s amazing!

I started working out with a trainer when cleared by my surgeon after surgery. I’m shocked by how much I can do already.

I had a staged duodenal switch. When I started I was 441, now I’m sticking at 295 but mostly because of a lymphatic mass that I hope will be removed this spring. The plastic surgeon says he thinks it is easily 30 to 45 pounds.
My pain is less that it was 150 #s ago... it is not gone but I have more mobility and more ability to do more things for myself! Both of my knees are bone on bone and I use a walker to get around at home, and a wheelchair when we go out. There are “inconveniences” after having the surgery but I sure don’t want to go back!

I have lost 116 lbs (some before surgery, 61.5 since surgery). I have, very honestly, never felt better. I really believe it's the combination of no added sugar/super low sugar, hardly any carbs (I have only eaten sweet potatoes, barley or fruit), exercise and Vitamins. I feel like a teenager again, at 41.

i know the feeling for sure every time i go for a walk its so rejuvenating to feel the movement without the pain or heavy breathing

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
